This is a YouTube video titled "Newborn Curl #newborn #newparents #takingcarababies" containing a discussion between two speakers about the newborn curl reflex in babies, explaining its significance and implications for infant sleep safety. The content is educational and aimed at new parents, created in March 2023.
Have you seen a brand new baby curl up and roll to their side like this?
Parents often wonder if this means their baby is about to roll over.
They worry it's unsafe for sleep because we're always taught back is best.
Let me set your mind at ease. This is not a sign of rolling. This is the newborn curl.
Here's why we see it. In the last couple months of pregnancy, a baby's muscles begin to strengthen and curl into that fetal position.
This gives them that nice tight.
Flexion you see in a full term newborn. Sometimes when we lay them down on a flat surface, those muscles contract and it can cause them to curl onto their side. Yes, the newborn curl. Now in order to roll over to their tummy and thus need to come out of the swaddle, those trunk and core muscles will need to strengthen greatly, which we typically won't see for a few months.
But what does this newborn curl mean for sleep? Be sure to read below.
