This is a YouTube video titled "When NOT to sleep train #babysleeptips" created on November 11, 2024. The content features a conversation between Cara Dumaplin and another speaker discussing reasons to avoid sleep training for infants, emphasizing developmental readiness, medical issues, and life circumstances. Cara Dumaplin provides expert advice and reassurance about sleep training decisions for parents.
Let's talk about reasons not to sleep train. Number one, if your little one is younger than five months. For four month olds and younger, I don't recommend sleep training. It's so important that we meet them where they are developmentally. Now this doesn't mean you can't work on sleep. You absolutely can. That's what I teach in my classes. That, that laying that healthy sleep foundation. That's okay. But let's wait for formal sleep training until they're at least five months old. Another reason not to sleep train. If your little one has a medical issue, for example, something's causing them pain, or maybe they're struggling with failure to thrive, they're falling off their growth chart. Anything medical that's going on, I would say let's wait until that's cleared up. It could be as easy as like an ear infection. If they're hurting, we want to wait. Another reason to hold off. If there's something happening in your life that would make it hard for you to be consistent. For example, let's say you're starting daycare next, next week, or you plan to travel in the next couple weeks, or let's say you're moving across the country. Anything that makes it where you're like, oh, I just, these next few weeks are going to kind of be up and down in our home. Okay, let's hold off on that.
Another reason not to sleep train. Are you like Kara?
What?
Are you trying to talk us out of this? I mean, I want to be honest with you. If you aren't ready, you don't have to. I always say if what you're doing is working, you don't have to change it. If your little one, it's is up a couple times a night and you feed and go right back to sleep. And that's working for you. Whatever your situation is, is working for you. You don't have to. You don't have to. If it's not working for you, if it's not safe, if it you're like this, just I like we can't go on like this. I want to be here for you. I want to be a trusted voice for you. I have a step by step plan to help you. I want you not to be afraid. I have all the research laid out. I have practical guidance for you that can help you have a great little sleeper. But if you don't want to, if what you're doing is working, you don't have to. And that will always be my mantra because it's really about you and your little one.
