Welcome to TN Nursery YouTube channel. Today, let's talk about black gum tree. Black gum is among the native trees that begin to change their color before other plant species. The leaves become vibrant red, summoning the arrival of autumn, followed by others. This tree is native to North America, with various species found throughout eastern North America from Ontario to Texas and Florida. It is a deciduous street tree that grows between 30 feet 50 feet in height and 20 feet 30 feet in spread. It is known for its thick straight trunk with alligator-like scales that distinguish it from other plants. The leaves are glossy dark green in the summer with an oval shape and rounded base. They get a beautiful wine red or peach in the fall, and other shades of bright red, yellow-orange, scarlet, or purple sometimes appear on the same branch. The leaves of these trees are typically between 2 to 6 inches long. The bluish-black fruit of the tree is an important food source for birds, attracting them from different regions. It is a low-maintenance plant with excellent ornamental value and is not affected by cold or warm weather or humidity. Black gum must be planted in an area with ample growth space, allowing it to attain the most height and spread during maturity. They grow with minimal pruning and once-a-year fertilization.
