Welcome to TN Nursery YouTube channel. Today let's talk about blue joint grass. Blue joint grass, also called Calamagrostis canadensis— the genus word Calamagrostis comes from the word reed grass, while the canadensis comes from Latin Canada— is a cool season species of grass that belong to the Poaceae family. Having perennial duration, it blooms in late spring and fall, early summer, giving a fantastic purplish at first which becomes tan later in the season. It spreads quickly by shallow rhizomes and self-seeding in moist to wet soils. The grass has many unique benefits, including stabilizing stream banks and managing eroded wet areas with dense and fibrous roots. It is always a sight to see in every environment. Its growth is widespread across North America. Historically, the grass was essential for beacons. It is now a great source of forage for small birds and other wildlife and a source of food for insects, including plant plugs, aphids, and leafhoppers. A great grass stands tall in winter, growing up to 2 2 feet 5 tall at maturity. The grass can grow in all soil types—loamy, clay, and sandy—and has excellent pH tolerance. The flowering period of the grass is between June, July, and August. The branches are up to 3 inches long and compound.
