Welcome to TN Nursery YouTube channel. Today let's talk about Iris cristata. Iris cristata is worthy of admiration due to its small stature and ability to bloom in the shade. It is a low-growing perennial plant that spreads swiftly to form a mat of thin, sword-shaped, yellowish-green pointed leaves approximately 5 to 6 inches in length. It features lilac, lavender, or light blue colored blooms with a white patch and an orange or yellow crest. This species' bloom has 6 petals, with the 3 upright petals called the standards and the 3 dangling petals called the falls. These plants have thick and fleshy stems called rhizomes that grow under the surface. Its flowers are held by very short stems, which are sometimes almost stemless. It is most commonly known as dwarf crested iris or lady's calamis. It is a native plant to the eastern United States, and you can often find them on rocky, wooded slopes, bluffs, and streams. There are 8 species in the genus Iris, and this plant is one. It may grow 6 to 9 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide.
