Bare root plants are superior to potted transplants. So if you're looking to put in a strawberry patch this spring, plant bare root crowns over transplants. If you're going to plant apple trees or fruit trees, plant bare root over ones that you find in a container. Now there's pros and cons to both. For example, if you're going to plant a bare root strawberry, probably not going to get a big harvest the first year versus if you transplanted potted container, you're going to get a harvest that year, but over that plant's entire life cycle, it might not be as healthy or produce as much as a bare root plant. But pros for bare root plants: they're always going to be cheaper, they're going to establish their roots faster and healthier because they're not going to be root bound, and they're going to suffer less with transplant shock than a container would. And now late winter is the perfect time to get your bare roots in the ground. Now you saw me plant a bare root weigia sometime maybe in early December, and I showed you how to plant bare root milkweed. And we're gonna be planting some more because I have another mystery box. Let's see what's inside. Big shout out to TN Nursery. They got all the bare root plants. Check them out. I'm so excited. First up, Christmas ferns. This is what our girl looks like, and she thrives in partial to full shade, probably on a northern slope, eastern slope, or underneath some trees. I know exactly where I'm gonna put her. Next up, we've got more native milkweed. This is what she looks like. She's either gonna go on this slope over here or in my apple tree guild. Next up, we have purple violet. This is what our girl look like. She's a native edible ground cover, but she does spread aggressively. Wherever I put her, I'm going to make sure that she has room to spread. And lastly, blue cohosh. And this is what she look like. She's a shade-loving woodland perennial, and she's medicinal. Let's see if she's in my book. This is my go-to medicinal plant book, and would you look right here, blue cohosh. So look for her feature on Medicinal Plants You Should Be Growing. So here's all the bare roots we got from TN Nursery. If you're interested in how we plant these bare root plants, make sure you're following my page. Again, now late winter is the perfect time to get your bare roots planted into the ground. I'm here to help you grow a happy, thriving garden by not only teaching you of what to do, but I'm also going to teach you how to do it.
