Taylor Desseyn asks a hiring manager whether engineers need prior experience. The answer: curiosity and hands-on tinkering matter more than credentials. Someone who builds things on their own will figure it out.

You're in a leadership position. You're probably responsible for some hiring some engineers right now. I feel like a lot of the market right now, it's very difficult to get a job. I've been preaching a lot, like you kind of have to have the experience before you get hired. Do you see that? Do you really look for people who already have the experience before coming in?
Yes, you do need to have, although I wouldn't say that experience is the seminal thing. Actually, what comes before experience is your genuine interest. You feel excitement, you want to build things, you want to figure out things, you have curiosity. How does Unix work? You know, why do we use terminal to run How it all builds, how abstraction layers come together. Of course, you're not going to understand everything in the beginning, but you at least have a curiosity to keep digging when you encounter something new. And if you have that, then you'll get experience just being home and being curious and tinkering with things.
