If you know someone at a company you're applying to, ask them about the referral process first. Submitting your resume directly without going through them makes them ineligible for the referral bonus and wastes their ability to help you.

If you submit to a company and you have a friend at the company, please, for the love of the Lord, make sure that you talk to them to see their referral process before you submit your resume. Because the moment you submit your resume to a company your friend works at, they can't be a referral for you anymore. And then they have no pull anymore. I have so many people that submit their resume to companies where their friends work, and then I'm like, well, did you put them down as your contact? And they're like, nope. Nope. I was like, what are we doing?
