ep. 08 - torc team heads to mexico for a whirlwind 48 hours

Torc's team flew to Guadalajara for 48 hours, hired Jimena for local community work, and hosted a Posadeb/ConfMX event that drew 300 people with a 50% sign-up rate for their Discord. They positioned Torque as Mexico's only community-first talent platform against competitors like Google and Zillow.

5:55 AM. Morning, Patrick.
Morning.
We're off to Guadalajara.
Let's go.
There are some major delays. Uh, you know, when your boy likes to get to the airport super early because he doesn't like to have flight anxiety, you get to the airport and you're like, this is great. I have no anxiety. Then your flight gets delayed an hour and a half, and literally I'm now sleepy because I could have slept in at this point. Now, I didn't obviously know about the flight being delayed. Anyways, that's not the point. The point of the matter is, is that we've been delayed. So right now I'm responding back to DMs. The response I got yesterday was overwhelming from the conference. So I have about 25, 30 DMs I gotta respond to right now. Already starting to plan for meetings next week with my boss Dave. We're talking about some messaging stuff we're gonna work on, how do we interact with Ronstadt in terms of growing community and what type of messaging you get from us at Torque versus Ronstadt. So we're gonna have meetings next up, I mean literally next week with meetings. I mean, my Tuesday right now is like a 14-15 meeting day. Monday is gonna be absolutely nuts as well. But super pumped again, heading to Guadalajara. I'm gonna meet up with, I think, Hima and Jason this afternoon, maybe for an early dinner. But again, thank you for Commit Your Code. The amount of DMs is overwhelming, so thank you.
We landed.
We are back in Mexico. We are back.
We got it, Patrick. We didn't forget this time. We didn't forget it.
We're gonna head up this place again. It feels like home, Patrick. I feel like this place is starting to feel home a little bit. I left Patrick in the hotel room because we were both laying down. I was like, I can't lay down. I'm so tired right now. So one of the best parts I love about this hotel, this AC hotel in Guadalajara, is this view.
Look at this.
Absolutely insane. So getting some work done. I have about 2, 2 and a half hours before probably doing dinner with some members of my team as well as some of her friends from Java We got people from ConfMX where we were at last month. So again, just building that community. Super pumped about that.
Yeah, get up and stomp it. Back it up and stomp it. Back it up and stomp it. Back it up. Too thick, can't lift it up. So good, can't get enough.
All right, got a little swim in. Uh, feel so much better. Wish I did that way earlier. So I'm gonna get ready for dinner. Little, little team community dinner and, uh, early to bed. Let's get it. We got dinner with, uh, one of my team members. So we're just gonna go Hang out for an hour or two, have some dinner, break some bread, then go to bed. I'm super excited to have you part of the team for sure. Super excited. Good stay, good company. It's a blast.
Hola, ¿qué tal a todos? Soy Jimena y estás viendo Tour Community.
Great evening tonight with my new hire. It was amazing to meet her. Super excited that she's joined the team. She's like Jason Torres.
This is why I love.
hiring community people because she knows everybody. Like, literally at dinner tonight, it was so cool. She was like, hey, like, I know basically how— I know people in like 5 or 6 cities where we can throw meetups like for Torque, which is exactly what we want to do. So, you know, talking to, you know, again, people that recommended her from the conference, everybody spoke so highly of her. You know, even at dinner tonight, she was running a hackathon, helping run a hackathon in tandem with being at dinner tonight. She opened up her phone, she had like I swear to you, 900 Discord channels she's a part of. She is an incredible hire. I'm super excited to have her. When you watch this, thank you. I'm so excited you're part of the team. Excited to build community with you in Mexico. How many times you hit snooze this morning? Dude, I hate you. My full intention was to get up this morning a little early, maybe get a little gym in, maybe get a little like nice little coffee, maybe overlooking like the city upstairs on the 12th floor. Nope, I stayed in bed and I couldn't get out of bed. And you hit snooze probably 9 times. I think I hit snooze about 16 or 18 times, yes. Yes, I was very aware of that. We're going into Pose-A-Dev. It's gonna be a good day, long day. I need some cold brew. Let's get it.
What's up, buddy? You excited? Taylor, you excited?
Don't talk to me yet, please.
Okay. Did you get that?
Yes.
No, I know, of course I know.
I wanna have a normal conversation.
This is great.
I'm feeling so spry this morning.
I can tell.
Getting up and working out, bro.
That's what I'm saying.
I wanted to do that, but like, golly, I could not.
Expectation, reality.
I've only done like American conferences, you know, and I think it's really, really special to be here, be in the community. You know, Hima is so entrenched in the community. She's already making introductions for us. She was a part of this conference's organizing panel last year, so she knows everybody. So it's really nice to have Hima on the team. We're the only talent platform. We're the only like Any sort of talent industry here. It's Google, it's Zillow, and it's us and Diamond. But we really want to make a difference, so we're trying to put our money where our mouth is. Like, we're here with Google, we're here with Zillow. We're the only talent platform or staffing person here that's sponsoring, which again is incredibly important.
Happy 4th of July to you back home. This is crazy.
This is a crazy one.
Oh my God. Oh wait, you just pulled out like that? Yeah.
Oh, don't eat the corn husk.
I eat corn husks. It's great. Adds extra protein.
Dude, that was awesome. I mean, again, like I said, like, I think there's just this, there's this like hunger, interest, you know, this is my second time now in Mexico, so I mean, I'm not like a pro at it, but like the consistent, like, there just is like an interest, like, what do you guys do? Who are you? And then everybody's eyes light up when we're like, we're a community-first jobs platform. Like, people are like, oh my gosh, that sounds great. They love the idea of events. And so yeah, it just is, it's awesome.
It's awesome.
It's awesome being here. It's awesome being in the community. You know, it's the way community works is you just build on it each time, right? So like I said last time, how do you eat an elephant, right? You eat an elephant one bite at a time. So we just, we just started. We picked Guadalajara last time. We did the dinner, you know. Now here I know some of the people from JSConf MX, right? And then you start to build relationships with them and they get you introduced to other people. So excited to be here. Excited for an awesome day. It's gonna be great.
Happy 4th of July to you back home. I am buzzing off.
That was great.
Hold on, I want to show you the farm. Let's see.
That was crazy.
Look at that, within not even an hour, we got 90 people. That was nuts. That was crazy.
We just farmed all their emails.
Yeah, hell yeah, we did. That's the point though, you know, we want to follow up with them so that we can give them information because a lot of people aren't going to like go back to the platform, but this is how we can get them into the community, in the Discord and stuff like that.
So good to be here.
Good to be here. You ready to speak?
Yeah, well, how you like—
don't be so fast.
3 PM?
Okay.
Pretty excited to share. So we were told there's like, I don't know, around 300 attendees for the event. And for the AirPod raffle, we— here, I'll show you— we have 150 signups. So we're basically, plus or minus a couple, 50% of the attendees signed up, which is awesome. Um, obviously, again, it does give us an opportunity to communicate with them after the fact, but But this is exactly what we're trying to do is build a community. So seeing these types of numbers, which is probably going to go up, we'll probably be closer to 200 signups by the time they actually do it, would be huge. So this is exciting. I mean, this is why we come to these things.
We are ending this closing event for Posadeb at Guadalajara. We have a full house waiting for the slides to present and introduce the team insights Another another is and some ruffles. We have a ruffle, some airports. Oh my God! These airports. And we're so happy. We enjoyed this event. This this was a full day with people, with community. Situación. Les invitamos a unirse y yo sé que también aquí están por los premios, ¿o no? Diría Cosmo. ¿Quieren premios? Eso me encanta. Sí, ¿verdad?
Otra vez.
¿Quieren premios? Esa es la actitud.
Bueno, ¿dónde está? Que pase al escenario.
Nos estamos viendo próximo año acá si nos invitan. Claro, díganle si es.
Aquí ahora estoy cayendo de la tabla. So good! You're so good! Oh my gosh! What up, tacos?
Very nice.
Bueno, cuatro tacos.
See the lock fall off?
The whole padlock fell on the ground. It's a great start. Hey, sorry, I didn't know there was a lock.
Don't worry about it.
Had a little hiccup, but everything is good. Immaculate vibes for a party of two. Private party.
Me and Patrick.
Yeah, shout out to Ryan. Look at look at this. Look at this view, guys.
First people showed up. The first.
We got the first.
Oh yeah.
New friends. New friends. This is gonna be good. Now we're now we're getting there. It's not a party for two anymore.
All right, ready?
Bring it in. All right. Nice.
Yeah.
I don't want to do it like sexy.
Very good.
Very good.
I have no idea what this is. The response from the community here for us has been so awesome. Like, everybody knows who Torque is. They like what we've been putting together for the community down here. Again, like, look, like, they came out in droves to, like, support what we're doing. Also free drinks.
Yeah, wow, thank you, thank you.
Thank you everybody for being here. Thank you for welcoming the Tor team to your community in Kuala Lumpur.
This has been easily one of the best conferences I've ever attended, so thank you. A big round of applause for Emacs.
Give a huge round of applause for everybody that put PostConf together. You guys did a fantastic job. Thank you for all the volunteers and staff. This was awesome. We will be back next year.
Cheers!
Yes!
It's been a great time in Mexico. Yesterday was unbelievable. Um, Patrick, I know you're probably gonna ask me to say something to the camera, but I'm saying it now too. Unreal experience. And what was so awesome is that everyone's eyes lit up when we said we're community first. They're like, oh, well, no one's doing this. Like, no one's doing meetups. No one's doing, you know, the Discords. No one's doing, you know, a lot of the programs I want to do that I told them about. So just a special experience. Um, so yeah, excited to get back, excited to be off the road, uh, at least until February now at this point. So, but who knows at this point, maybe something will pop up in January. Y'all have a good one. Gonna get back to work.
