Taylor Desseyn argues that tech conferences exist primarily for networking, not learning. You can watch videos online anytime, but events are where you actually meet people in person.

If we take a step back and say, what's the purpose of these events? Education is not the purpose at all because that's something that you can easily get from just watching a video online. So that's not the reason. What is the reason? Well, like it's partially the reason because it gives educators or even like industry professionals a reason to educate. But if you can satisfy that through other means, then what's like the primary reason? The one thing that you can do with an event that you can't do any other way And that is to get people to meet each other in person.
