Upward communicating is the biggest issue and one of the reasons why you do not get a promotion.
I would second that. I think we tend to overestimate how much people are paying attention to our work, and nobody's going to advocate for you better than yourself. And I was speaking with somebody a couple weeks ago, and they were talking about how they were interested in getting a promotion, but they hate selling themselves. They hate talking about all their accomplishments all the time. It feels just icky to them. And I basically told them, if you want this promotion, you have to talk about your accomplishments. You have to continue to advocate for yourself, or else that promotion is never going to happen.
