Taylor Desseyn welcomes Jason to the team and explains why Torque hires junior developers: they bring hunger that seasoned engineers lose. He built the community because his 2011 job search was brutal, serving tables with no network. Join Discord, attend meetups, get real job help.
How are you? How are you? Good to see you. Yeah, absolutely. Uh, I'll do another cold brew. Yep.
How's your weekend?
Good, good. Busy. I think I've been here 3 out of the last 4 days, so yeah. Yeah, did you guys get the pistachio milk in yet? Not yet. All right, because my wife was like Craving for one of y'all's matches yesterday. All right, sweet. I will let I will let her know. Jason, what's up, man? How are you doing? Dude, excited to have you on board. Really excited. Yeah, I know. I know it's obviously. Your first opportunity. I really, really am glad you're here. Yeah, I mean, listen, what I mean, what we're trying to build is huge, right? And we need guys like you who are hungry. And I think it's special when you hire somebody who has not been in the industry before like yourself, right? And that's why I'm so important about hiring people like junior developers and just junior people in general who have not had the experience, because I think there's a— there's another level of fire that you're not going to find with like a senior person, right? I mean, you take it Take it from me, I mean, you know, I've been around the block. I may not have quite the fire I used to. I encourage everybody to be a part of the Torque community, and I think community looks different to different people. And I would say you don't have to come with anything, you just need to come and be engaged. I think what makes a community is a bunch of individuals who are pretty passionate about helping other people. And so I want to develop a community where people are passionate about helping other people in their job search. And so if you love to help people and you love to give back to people, I would love to have you. But even if you're like, Taylor, I'm not a huge fan of like giving back to people, I just want to be there, we'd love to have you too, right? Um, but when it comes to hanging out with us, whether it's on our Discord, whether it's virtual meetups, whether it's on our platform to get you a job, You just need to come and just be who you are and just be engaged. That's all I ask. You don't need to come with this amount of years of experience. You don't have to have this certification. You don't have to do— have invented this, man. Just come as you are. And I think you're going to enjoy the community. The reason why I care so much about people and community and helping people find jobs is because in 2011, when I was on the job search, I didn't know how to find a job. I didn't know how to use LinkedIn. I didn't know what job boards were. I didn't know how to network. I didn't know I didn't know there were meetups around. I didn't know there was conferences. I just was serving tables 6 nights a week, losing money every single night. And so I just want to create something that my former 2011 self would appreciate and would be thankful for.
