what qualifies you for a promotion #careeradvice #jobpromotion #salaryincrease

Two people discuss what actually gets you promoted. They say role descriptions are guides, not checklists, and that what matters is showing business impact, getting advocates, and mentoring others.
If I'm just hitting these things, I therefore immediately qualify for a promotion. And that is just not the case.
You have to do the job before you get the job.
Yeah. And the hardest part of this is a lot of companies have career ladders that line up, you know, what does it mean to be a mid-level engineer? What does it mean to be a senior engineer? What does it mean to be a staff engineer? Or you have multiple levels in there. And then these are necessary. Like, these are absolutely necessary to be able to check yourself against the performance that you're doing right now, as well as what am I missing for that next level? The problem is people treat it as a checklist. That they're saying, if I'm just hitting these things, I therefore immediately qualify for a promotion. And that is just not the case. It's supposed to be a guide. You have to prove, okay, you're doing these things, but how does it tie back to the business? How are you advocating for that? How are you mentoring others? It's necessary for these kinds of things, especially trying to get a raise or a promotion.
