Excel lets you put anything anywhere, which breaks data analysis at scale. The speaker argues spreadsheets are fundamentally unstructured and advocates moving to data warehouses with relational formats and semantic layers for reliable analytics.

I don't think spreadsheets have a place anymore for analysis. One of the big reasons for that in my thinking about spreadsheets is that spreadsheets are really horrible data format. It's too customizable. You can have a random number in cell A, C, a million, and that will mess up your whole data structure whenever you try to do an analysis in Excel. And that's just how we interact with it. We've gotten used to having like, you have a table in this part of the sheet and a table in this part of the sheet and this part of the sheet. It's just a bad data format. And if you want to do analysis, the best way to do it is in a data warehouse. You can build a lot of semantic knowledge
