Short YouTube monologue arguing that modeling work is roughly half spreadsheet time and half interpersonal research, synthesis, and framing—combining inputs from tax, sales, and cost teams to build insightful tools.
People sometimes ask me in a modeling project, how much of your time are you spending in front of a spreadsheet? And I say, rule of thumb, about half. I mean, modeling is not just a profession where you're sitting in a dark room in front of a spreadsheet for 24 hours a day. Half the battle is the nuance of the talking to people and research and getting insights and trying to ask good questions and learn. And take all of that and take what the tax guy told you and the salesperson and the cost team and kind of collectively frame it all together into a beautiful tool. I mean, that process is so incredibly important of getting smart and demonstrating great insights.
