Paul Barnhurst recommends Bob Burg's The Go-Giver, arguing that effective networking isn't about what you can get. It's about helping others first. When you focus on giving, he says, opportunities expand naturally and relationships become mutually beneficial instead of transactional.

One of my favorite networking books, and whenever people ask for advice around networking, I recommend the book because it was recommended to me when I was working with kind of a networking firm, is The Go-Giver by Bob Burg. People so often think networking is about how can people help me, or they feel like it's slimy or sales or politics. And we've all felt that way. I've felt that way before. But what it talks about is the right kind of networking is all about what can you give to others. If you go into it looking how can you help others and with a service mindset, you will get more out of it than if you go into it thinking How can I get the most out of it? It's amazing how changing your mindset can explode the opportunities in networking.
