This is a YouTube video titled "Consciousness: Did It Precede Intelligence? Exploring Ideas #shorts" featuring a discussion between Suzanne Gilder and Donald Hoffman about the nature of consciousness, exploring the hypothesis that consciousness may be fundamental and precede intelligence and physical materialism. The content was created in July 2025 and delves into philosophical and scientific perspectives on consciousness.
Suzanne Gilder Consciousness meets quantum computing in human robots. That's what she's exploring. She says maybe consciousness didn't emerge from intelligence, maybe it preceded it, maybe it generated it. I would love to hear your reaction to that. Quite profound. When I heard it.
I think the first time I heard the idea articulated this way was Donald Hoffman's work. And so I think he's done a really great job of, from the direction of a scientist of perception saying here's what we have evidence for. I, I just can't, you know, I, I need to, I need to now explore the hypothesis that consciousness is fundamental in order to do scientific work going forward. And then I, I was just this week, Annika Harris, who is Sam Harris's wife, she just released, released this book Lights on. And the whole theme of it is, is consciousness fundamental? And it means that consciousness preceded like you know, physical materialism. And the whole idea of this hard, the hard, conscious hard problem of consciousness is like y. How do we get from non living matter into this like conscious brain that we have? Right? And so the, so the whole idea flips it on its head and says like that question doesn't matter at all.
