Unfiltered AI Talk: "My Expiration Date Is Here" - Passing the Torch to Gen Z | Episode [21]

Short interview between Robert Ta and Jim Jokoi in which Jim, a retired Berkeley City College student taking digital photography, reflects on his limited hands‑on use of AI (Siri/ChatGPT), concerns about misinformation on social media, uncertainty about AI’s civic implications (voting, political influence), and a generational willingness to defer stewardship to younger people. The tone is reflective and tentative; key themes are need for better public information, worry about social-media-driven radicalization, and a plea that younger builders 'do the right thing.'
And so I'm tired of tech billionaires telling us how to think. And I'm just interviewing people and getting a pulse on what do you think about the age of AI? Like, how is it affecting you?
Yeah, you know, I hope to learn a little bit more, but I'm, you know, kind of slow to be up on the latest information. Cool.
Yeah. Tell me a bit about yourself. What's your name?
My name is Jim Jokoi.
Jim Jokoi. I'm Robert Ta. Cool. And this is my dog, Kenji. I'm also training him at the same time. Well, how do you spend your days?
Well, I'm retired.
Okay, cool.
So, yeah, so my retirement time, I'm taking some classes here at Berkeley City College. Great.
What kind of classes you been taking?
Digital photography.
Very cool. Okay, interesting, interesting. Have you played around with any of the AI tools like ChatGPT or anything like that?
You know, I always on my iPhone, sometimes I'll just ask the question, but I don't really. I'm kind of. Because of my age, I think I don't really know what my resources are. So I just, I use it very minimally. I usually type it in. But what do you.
What's the last couple things you asked it? For example, I'm super curious.
I discovered that I could ask Siri what song is playing. That's I'm hearing out in public. So I learned that as something that's interesting, you know, something that I'm usually good at, recognizing some tunes, but. Yeah, I thought that that's pretty useful. Yeah, it was interesting. Yeah. Yeah. I was at a show and. And I tried it out and sure enough, it was accurate to this very obscure piece of music that they were, you know, feeding into.
Got it. Okay. Okay. So I'm curious. Here's. Here's a. Since it seems like you're not super in the know with what's going on, there's a latest headline that actually ChatGPT, the most famous AI tool, encouraged a student to kill themselves and the student was suicidal. You read about that? Do you have any thoughts about that?
Well, you know, I did. I just read the headlines and about how the parents are. Guests are assuming. Yeah.
They're taking legal action.
Yeah. Because. And I saw some of the little dialogue exchanges between. So I really don't. You know, that's something that's very concerning, obviously.
Do you have kids yourself?
I don't, no.
Do you have friends with kids or family?
With younger people?
What do you think of the younger generation? Like, I feel like you've seen like social media affect this current generation and then now AI is taking it a step further. Any thoughts on that?
I just feel like it's new technology that I need to get better informed about and so I'm doing it little by, and I've heard all the kind of the, the concerns and warnings about how it could overtake kind of shutting down systems and actually there might be a tipping point where we arrive at a place where it is kind of. But there's so many things that's happening, you know, in the world where so many things.
Yeah, so it's overwhelming.
Yes. So, yeah, so, yeah, so I, you know, I, I, yeah, I, I don't know, you know, I, I, I don't wanna, this is just me, but I don't really want to kind of make any kind of solid kind of determination of whether it's good or bad. And right now, you know, like even talking with you, just getting a sense of, you know, the information and then maybe later I'll say yes, you know, if I was to vote on some sort of kind of legislation that comes up, yeah, it would be where I need to be informed. So right now I'm in the learning mode. Learning mode, exactly.
I appreciate you sharing. So, quick question. So you mentioned voting. That's great that you vote. What if AI becomes so smart it could replace politicians? Would you rather trust AI president or a current president?
You know, I'm just, I really don't know how to answer that because, you know, I'm slowly realizing now how, you know, I listen to analysts and they say about how the, the election was really kind of affected significantly by the Internet and social media in this past several election cycles. And, and, and I'm getting a sense that there obviously some sort of effect and yeah, so I really don't know how to, you know, I don't know where to go from here because you know, I actually have friends that have kind of gone off the deep end where I just go like what, what happened?
What do you mean by that?
Well, you know, they'll post these things that are very alarming to me and I go like where did they get this from that they're posting?
Do you have an example of one of these alarming off the deep end takes.
Yeah, I have a friend that I thought I knew well, but he's posting these, I mean, kind of the hot wired issues that I tried to kind of steer away from his religion, politics and everything, at least on Instagram.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But he's, he's sitting. Every single one of them were. You know, it's. It's almost like, I don't know exactly what his motivation is, but it's almost like he's pulling up this information where it's. It's making people kind of the Christians against the Muslims kind of like these. Do you know that this is happening here? A lot of it's kind of originated from Great Britain that I see that there's these conflicts. So I don't know where he's harvesting this stuff, but I just, you know, I. I don't know what's going on right now, but I think he might have kind of like, kind of sauce. And I'm a little concerned for him, but, you know, you know, his mo. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, that's interesting because implicitly what I'm hearing is just there's a lot of uncertainty in the world. Yeah, there's a lot of things going on. There's a lot of complicated situations, and it's hard to parse signal from noise, even in your own friend groups. That's what I'm hearing. Is that right? I mean, most.
Most of my friends, I feel like they're kind of sensible, relying on science for climate change and kind of, you know, but. But I don't know where he's getting this information, his takes. So I think that might have been where he's maybe taking a deeper dive than I have into researching wherever he wants to take himself. But it's. To me, it's a little disturbing.
Yeah. Got it. Okay, so if I were gonna meet Sam Altman or Mark Zuckerberg next week, what would you say to them?
You know, I want people that are better informed than me to relay kind of their concerns because I really feel like I'm, you know, despite my age, I really feel like I don't have enough information on my plate to really say something without maybe regretting what I like.
100% confidence.
Yeah. Or more confident. Yeah. Yeah.
But I actually think nobody knows shit right now. Well, that's actually why I'm going on interviewing people, is there's a lot of uncertainty. And even the people working in it, I would say I'm working in it. I have no ego. I'm going to say I don't know shit about it. We just all got to learn together. And so I'm kind of curious on that. Where do you like. It seems like you have a desire to learn. Do you know what resources or support is available to you to learn and get hands on with AI get up to speed so that the next time, you know, voting cycle comes up, you're a more informed voter.
Yeah, you know, I only will do that when it comes up. I feel like I have so much. So many other things to kind of. I'm up. That's on my plate.
Yeah.
That I really feel like this huge topic of AI to put on my plate would just totally sabotage all the other things that I'm trying to. Yeah, it's just so. So, so, you know, I'm very concerned about, you know, the things I hear about what could possibly happen, you know, and I obviously watch. Well, I don't know, it's not obvious, but I do watch people that I respect what they have to say about kind of their feelings on AI and so forth. And so I.
What are those people?
You know, kind of like, those people are. I can't think of, like, in your friend groups or like influencers, like Elon Musk or. No, far from it.
No, far from it. Tell me where far from it.
Well, no, no, I usually lean towards maybe kind of like sources like the New Yorker magazine people that I know that there's. I forgot. What's her name? She's written about the kind of. The concerns of the Silicon Valley. I forgot what her name is, but my friend keeps telling me about it. But. Yeah, so I'm getting bits and pieces about what's alarming and kind of to be concerned about, but it's. I can't really think of anyone right now just off the top of my head. So just.
So I appreciate your time just to reflect what I'm hearing. There's a lot going on. You already got a full plate and, you know, it's a big deal.
Yes.
But it's hard to make time to, like, add this to your plate because it's so big. And then the next election cycle, you want to be a responsible voter. So at that point, then you'll start learning. Oh, absolutely.
Yeah.
And it also sounds like you have some resources of which to learn from.
But you know what? For me, I feel like, you know, I'm of a generation on their way out. I'm relying on people like your age and your demographic to. To kind of rally and do these things. I feel like I did my part during the Vietnam era.
Oh, yeah.
You know, kind of work.
Would you do that?
Well, I was obviously very upset about, you know, our involvement in the war. And, and, and so it's. So I was more kind of. I had more active. Active kind of involvement at that time. So I feel like now I need to let the younger generation really take charge because the future is theirs. You know, I've kind of spent my time on this planet, you know, where I'm not going to be spending as much time as someone like yourself that's really needing to kind of secure the future in a way that's going to make it work for you and your children. You know, I feel like I'm kind of. My expiration date is already.
No, dude, you're never expired. You're never expired. Hey, no, no, no. Well, okay, one last question. What would you say to young builders of the future? What would you say to them?
You know, just do the right thing. I don't have children, but maybe, you know, think about your children and their future that they're going to have to kind of, like, deal with. And so I don't know where that kind of. I mean, there's. Yeah. I just hope that people younger will do the right thing and.
And humanity will survive.
Yeah. Yeah.
And thrive.
Hope for the best. Cool.
Yeah. Thanks a lot.
You're.
Well, have a good day. Thanks a lot. Bye.
Bye. Cool.
Let's end it there. Great. That was pretty good.
