Most teams waste time tweaking prompts without measuring what actually works. The speaker argues for systematic evaluation instead of guessing, showing how to reduce hallucinations and build reliable AI systems that don't frustrate customers.
One of the biggest mistakes that I see AI teams do is prompting and praying. You're tweaking these prompts, you think you're fine tuning them, but you have no scientific basis or systematic evaluation for did this get better or not. An LM pipeline is subjective by nature. It is non deterministic by nature. What is good or ground truth? That depends on product taste. One of the best ways that I've seen to think about this as a mental model is think about the gulf of comprehension, think about the gulf of specification, and think about the gulf of generalization. And that way you can systematically think about how do I make this better with scientific rigor, not just prompting and praying. And then eventually your agent just hallucinates and you end up getting more customer support tickets and unhappy customers.
