Robert Ta argues that AI companies should build domain-specific harnesses around models rather than competing on the models themselves. Cursor uses KIMI 2.5 with developer data to outperform Claude Opus on benchmarks. The real advantage is shipping these harnesses fast enough that frontier models can't catch up.
What do you think of this term, harness as a service? Because I think you're looking at OpenAI, you're looking at Cursor, just the new form factor of service-based offerings.
So I'll speak to it from my vantage point, which is I think anybody that says that they know everything in the AI game, like, doesn't know shit and they're just pumping themselves up. I don't know everything, but I'll say I put out content about AI and I try to get signal from market about what AI builders are struggling with. On threads in particular lately, I've been getting lots of questions about how do you build a harness? That's the latest hotness, which is the harness is the moat. You could do what Cursor did, which is outcompete Opus in SUI benchmarks with an open source model, KIMI 2.5, plus a really robust harness fed from their curated collection of developer data, how developers code, different kinds of use cases around coding, front end, back end, bug fixes, et cetera, triage. If that's proven, this meta, which is every AI business is trying to think, what can't the frontier models do? AKA, what won't they eat up in the world and where will I survive? What's my little island to build a moat around? So Harness as a Service, thinking about that. I'm combining a few data points, which is everybody's looking for the harness now for their domain-specific economically valuable problems, which is their island or their moat against the frontier labs. AKA, can I go deeper in a domain than a Frontier lab can, and they maybe won't. It might not be worth it to them. And then how do I build a harness is the next question that that engineering team is tasked with.
So first is sort of the understanding the harness, and then it's like, how do I get this shit out to production as fast as possible so I can start building that moat?
