In this episode of Inside Orthopedics, host Tiger Buford interviews Erik Paul, CEO of Exiom (formerly Axiom), about the company’s breakthrough 3D‑printed orthopedic brace solution. Paul explains how personal frustration with traditional plaster casts for his children sparked the search for a better alternative, leading to a partnership with a Spanish firm (Excalib) that developed an iPad‑mounted 3D scanner and automated software that creates print‑ready brace models in minutes. The current workflow involves clinics using iPads with scanners to capture limb geometry, sending the data to Exiom’s North‑Florida production facility, and receiving the printed brace within 48 hours. A forthcoming on‑site printer will enable same‑day, in‑office printing (30‑40 min). The business model combines a percentage‑of‑revenue share on each brace, optional equipment leasing/purchase, and consumable sales, all managed through the software platform. Exiom has cleared the FDA, established quality systems, and is rolling out to clinics in North & South Florida, South Alabama, the Midwest, and New England, with plans to reach a dozen locations within months and nationwide scale in 2‑3 years. Marketing relies on trade shows (AAOF, OTA), social media, and a forthcoming national TV feature. The company holds European and U.S. patents covering both the software algorithm and the overall process, which Paul cites as the “secret sauce.” Looking ahead, Exiom aims to expand brace models (foot, ankle, leg), explore additional 3D‑printed medical products, and remain open to acquisition if the opportunity aligns. The interview concludes with contact information (exiom.com) for providers interested in the technology.
