Johan Wikström, a software engineer with cystic fibrosis, founded Tolka AI Therapeutics to develop antibiotics that work against resistant bacteria. He uses machine learning to design precision medicine, partnering with his wife, who isolates bacteriophages in their lab. His condition makes him acutely aware of how current antibiotics fail patients.

So my name is Johan Wikström. I run Tolka AI Therapeutics, and we make precision medicine against antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. But I also have this underlying health condition called cystic fibrosis, which means that I am more prone to getting bacterial infections than the average person. So I've always wanted to do something to help people with cystic fibrosis and others suffering from this problem. The antibiotics that I am taking from day to day, they cost tens of thousands of dollars per month, and they are not terribly efficient. So I am a software engineer by training. I specialize in machine learning and building products from scientific breakthroughs, essentially. But my wife has been incredibly supportive through this whole process. We could not have started this lab without her. Originally, it was just me and her, and she had a medical background, and in her undergrad, she actually isolated bacteriophages as a research So she had that basic knowledge to get started.
