10.1 Good Habits that Incredibly Lazy People Can Do Easily

TJ Walker shares 10 tiny habits for lazy people: read a joke, drink water, do one pushup, take one photo, discard one item, write bad ideas for a minute, stretch for 20 seconds, say a morning affirmation, fist pump, and reflect for 10 seconds at night. Each takes seconds and requires almost no willpower.

But what happens if you happen to be incredibly lazy? In this video, you're going to learn 10.1 habits that incredibly lazy people can do easily. Now, confession here. I am a lazy person. I'm also someone who does a lot of habits. I try to practice a hundred good habits every day, but it doesn't come naturally to me. I am lazy. I probably shouldn't tell you this because I am in the self development space, but I'm so lazy, I've only made my bed about five times in my life. As much as I love shrimp and I love shrimp, I'm too lazy to peel shrimp. So unless the shrimp is peeled, I won't eat it. So it's not like I have some perfect willpower and I'm taking ice showers at 4 in the morning every day. No, I'm with you. If you're feeling a little bit lazy, this is the video for you. Here's the problem. If you tell yourself lazy and you're not good at habits, it snowballs and you get worse and worse. And habits can get worse and worse. But where do you start? Unfortunately, too many people try to start with, I'm going to exercise two hours a day or I'm going to run that marathon. No, I want you to be easy on yourself. I want you to start in a very easy, simple way. It's so simple, anybody could do it. Now, I do differ from a lot of my colleagues in the habit space. Conventional wisdom is you can only focus on one good habit at a time. I think that's baloney. I want you to focus on 10 habits at once. But the 10 habits are so easy, you can do them without breaking a sweat. And by having that as a foundation, a core, you'll start to see yourself as someone who can fulfill good habits on a daily basis. Habit number one, read one joke a day. That's not too tough, is it? There are a gazillion apps and websites that give you the joke of the day. Why is this important? It puts you in a good mood, puts a smile on your face, exposes you to a little bit of artwork, and just frames your brain in a way to be more receptive, to get the day going and you're starting off on the right foot. It's something I do every day and it's fun. What's wrong with starting a day with a chuckle? Habit number two, start the day when you get out of bed by simply raising your fist and saying, it's gonna be a great day. I know it sounds cheesy it sounds hokey. It sounds like Stuart Smiley from the old Saturday Night Live skits. But it does help a little. It just encourages you to get out of bed and to start the day right and to be open to positive things happening in your life. I've done this only for about six months. It does make me feel better. I don't do it when my wife is looking. It looks a little silly, but it's just a little mental note. Today's going to be a great day. A simple, easy habit. Habit number three. You've heard this one before, but it's a great idea. And that is to start the day drinking one large glass of water. It's not hard to do it, and by doing that habit, it creates positive momentum for you to get through the rest of the day. Perhaps other habits you need to do. Is it the end of the world if you don't drink eight glasses of water or 64 ounces? Or your weight in pounds in terms of ounces? There's a lot of nonsense about water out there. I'm not telling you you have to drink water all day long. But as a simple habit, as soon as you get up drinking a large glass of water, that's a good habit. You're likely dehydrated, and you're also less likely to put more sugary cream and other things that are not healthy in your mouth if you're starting off the day drinking a large glass of water. Habit four, Pull out your cell phone and write down for just one minute, bad ideas. I realize coming up with good ideas for a minute could be tough, but come up with bad ideas, outrageous ideas, ridiculous ideas, business plans that you think are crazy. What this does is it stimulates a part of your brain. It gets you thinking expansively. It breaks you from traditional thinking. You don't have to act on them. You don't have to go sell a coffee mug that refills itself every two seconds because that was in your plan. Just write down bad ideas every day for less than one minute. And if you're like me, what you'll find is that every so often, once a week or so, something that seemed like a bad idea a week ago is now a good idea that you're able to act upon. Habit number five, stretch for just 20 seconds a day. That's all I do. I bend over, try to touch my toes, cross legs, try to touch my toes again, bend legs the other way, touch my toes. Then I put my leg on the counter, I stretch in each direction, and then I Pull my foot back behind me and stretch. It only takes about 20 seconds, but it gets me limbered up, feeling more comfortable, relaxed, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment early in the day. I typically do that while I'm waiting for my coffee to be made. A very simple, easy habit to do. Sure, you might not get to the gym today or run a marathon, but you can at least stretch and stay limber. Habit number six, do one pushup a day. That's it. One pushup. You can't tell me you don't have time or the energy to do one pushup. Steven Gies of the Mini Habits franchise has really popularized this idea and it is a great habit. It's also easy. It's only one push up. Now, I think what you'll find is after you do one push up for a few days, you'll find I'm already down here. It's pretty easy to do two or three, but start with just one push up per day. Habit number seven, take one photo a day. Now, you may be used to taking selfies or other snapshots, but if you tell yourself you're going to take one photo a day, it could be something in your home, your office, your desk, your child. It just conditions you to keep your eye open for something creative, something beautiful, something different. Doesn't take a lot of time. But if you see something and you realize I haven't taken a photo today, you take that photo. It is a type of art form. It's not the same thing as making a great world class sculpture. But one picture with your cell phone a day opens you up to a type of artistic and creative thinking. And you can do it in five or ten seconds. Habit number eight, throw one thing a day away that you don't need or use or like anymore. It could be as small as a paper clip. I just found this. It's a broken lid from a compact for powder makeup that I keep here in my studio. It's not of use to anyone else. I don't think it's really recyclable. I'm going to throw it away right now. This is something you can do typically 20 seconds a day, 10 seconds a day. Okay. If you can give it away, recycle it, sell it, even better. But I want to keep things simple for lazy people like you and me. Look for something in your house, your office, your car, your space that you just know is not of use to anyone else. Throw it away today. It's a great, simple habit. Habit number nine, celebrate every single habit victory of yours by bringing up your fist and saying yes, giving yourself a fist pump. Now this is a concept popularized by habit expert and researcher BJ Fogg, Stanford University. I think it's a great idea. It helps give you positive reinforcement, gives you that reward when you are doing these other simple habits. And this really doesn't take more than about two seconds. Yes, I've done it. Habit number 10 spend just 10 seconds at the end of every day before you go to sleep. Reflecting on one thing that happened today keeps you in a positive frame of mind, makes it easier to sleep without stress, and makes you feel even better about starting the next day. So spend a little time on reflection. No, you don't have to journal for 20 minutes a day. You don't have to write a long, long gratitude journal filling up three pages. Just stop. Reflect for 10 seconds on one good thing that's happened. And now habit 10.1, the bonus habit. I want you to do something that's going to make it really easy to not Forget about these 10 habits on a regular basis. So use the system. I do. It's called the selfie speak programming method. I just take out my cell phone, I hit the audio memo record and I just tell myself the habits I'm going to fulfill. It's as simple as hitting record and just talking. TJ every single day, you're going to read one joke. You're going to start off the day by saying it's going to be a great day. You're going to drink a glass of water each day. First thing, you're going to write one minute of bad ideas. You're going to do one push up every day. Take one photo every day. Throw away one thing every day that you don't need anymore. Celebrate every habit victory with a yes and a fist pump and reflect for 10 seconds a day on something good that's happened. I hit stop. That only takes a minute or so. Then listen to that audio every day. It will reinforce these habit goals and you're essentially advertising. You're marketing to yourself these habits that you want to do. And it only takes one click each day. Listen to the audio. That's the easiest way to help these habits become ingrained so you don't have to think about it so you can be lazy and still build a stronger foundation on good habits. I'm TJ Walker.
