TJ Walker reflects during a short YouTube video on having held two yard sales while packing for a move, using the experience to contrast valuable art collecting (which benefits culture) with status-driven accumulation of possessions. He states his ideal is to collect experiences—especially with interesting people—instead of stuff, and asks viewers what they like to collect.
I had not one, but two yard sales this weekend trying to get rid of things. Packing up for a big move here caused me to reflect a little on how people acquire things. Now I think the world is indebted to serious art collectors, people who cultivate and curate the very best, then leave it to museums. I benefited from that. All of culture has. But too many people collect stuff just to collect stuff, to show off status, to make themselves feel important. You see that with fancy wines, cars, a lot of other things. I got a little more stuff than I want, but I'm getting rid of everything. My ideal in life is to collect experiences. Experiences with fun, interesting people. Not collect stuff.
