What do you do if you're at a networking event or a cocktail party? You've met someone, you've chatted, but you kind of feel like, okay, now I'm ready to go meet someone else. You don't want to be rude. You don't offend them. You don't want to say, well, I've run out of interesting things to say with you. That would be rude. How do you get out of it gracefully? Well, if you're like a lot of people, you just kind of keep on talking and keep on talking, then maybe you look at your watch and then you kind of finally slink away. It doesn't have a good feel. Here's my recommendation. Continue looking at the person. Don't be looking around the room for someone more interesting to chat with. Look at them and then say, thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me. I've enjoyed our conversation. I really hope you enjoy the rest of the evening. Smile and keep going. Go to the next person this way. You've thanked them, you've acknowledged them. You didn't ignore them or slight them by looking around and dodging them. You handled it gracefully. That's the best way to handle it.
