So you've come up with a great idea. It's an invention. Now all you need are investors, new clients, new customers. How do you get people excited about your idea? Well, you've got to make an elevator pitch because people with money, people who could back you, they don't know you, they might not want to sit around and listen to you for an hour. So you've got to learn how to really sell yourself to quickly, perhaps in under a minute. So for starters, get rid of all the extraneous stuff. Don't tell people. Well, my whole life I wanted to be an inventor. It always seemed glamorous. Nobody cares. Instead, get right to the meat of it. What is your invention? What's the real problem that it's solving? How do you know people want this? You know what? There are a million good ideas out there. Why is this one something people could make money from? So you've got to spell that out. Why is it a good idea? Why specifically are people willing to open up their wallet, take money out and give it to you? That's what business people are looking for before they write you a check, before they decide to invest their time, money and energies into it. Other don'ts don't tell people that you're desperate because you've invested every last dime you had. Nobody likes that. They whiff. Get that smell of desperation. Your history. The only reason you should be appealing to someone is because this is a great idea. Because they can make money. Don't confuse their money making their selfishness, which is okay, versus sympathy and what friends and family might do to help someone. If you're giving a business pitch, it has to be on business terms. So tell people. What is the specific need out there? What's the problem that your service or product solves? How can you realistically create it now? There are a lot of problems out there. You may have come up with an idea, but if it cost a billion dollars to create it, you don't really have a business. Tell people exactly what your plan is. Can you create this product or service, bring it to market and sell it for a reasonable price? Some other don'ts don't tell people. I guarantee you you're going to double your money in 18 months. Guess what? You don't know. Now if you had to put together a business plan, that's for something to look at later. But when it comes to the pitch, when you're just speaking to someone, maybe you have from floor 1 to floor 10 on the elevator, that's when you have to make your idea. Clear. Talk about the one thing your idea is going to do to make money. Show them your passion for it. Show them your excitement. But show them it's real good luck.
