TJ Walker argues that aspiring speakers can't wait to be discovered. Event planners book speakers they already know and trust, so you need to build visibility and an audience first. Talent alone isn't enough; demand creation is what makes you an obvious choice for bookings.

Ultimize. If you're waiting to be discovered as a motivational speaker, you're waiting for something that almost never happens. There's no event planner sitting at a desk right now searching for unknown speakers, hoping to find you. That's not how decisions get made anymore. Event organizers choose speakers they already know, or speakers who are recommended by people they trust, or speakers who already have visible proof that audiences pay attention to them. That is the entire game. If you're unknown, you're not being considered, not because you're not talented, because you're not in their field of vision. Most aspiring speakers misunderstand this. They believe the path looks like this: create a great speech, practice it, improve it, then someone will recognize the quality and give them an opportunity. Sounds logical. It's also outdated. Quality alone does not create visibility. Visibility creates the chance for your quality to matter. This is why you can have two speakers. One is excellent but unknown. The other is good but highly visible. The visible speaker gets booked over and over again because they feel like a safe choice. Familiarity reduces risk in the eyes of meeting planners, and event organizers are always managing risk. They're not just asking, is this person good? They're asking, will this person connect with my audience? If your audience already knows the speaker, the answer's already answered. That is a massive advantage. That's why building an audience is not optional. It is the entry point. When people have already heard you, already seen you, already engaged with your ideas, you are no longer an unknown. You're a proven communicator, and that changes everything. You stop trying to convince people to take a chance on you. You become the obvious choice. Now, here is the shift you need to make. Stop thinking like someone trying to get booked. Start thinking like someone building demand. Instead of asking, how do I get more speaking opportunities? Ask, how do I get more people to hear me and to watch me regularly? Because once people hear you consistently and see you consistently, you move into a completely different category. You're no longer chasing opportunities. Opportunities begin to notice you. This is the part most most people skip. They try to jump directly to getting booked without building any presence. That creates frustration because the system they're trying to use depends on something they have not built yet. Attention. When you build attention first, everything downstream becomes easier. Speaking, courses, products, partnerships, all of it becomes easier. Because people already know who you are. Nobody's waiting to book you, but they are ready to book someone they already recognize. Your job is to become that person.
