Sen Amy Klobuchar Gives a Horrible Speech at Democratic Convention
31 Dec 2025 · 2 min
TJ Walker breaks down why Amy Klobuchar's 2016 convention speech fell flat. She yelled the whole thing at a relentless pace with no tonal shifts, making it feel longer than it was. Walker points out that a microphone means you don't need to project like you're addressing a crowd from a stage.

On night two of the 2016 Democratic convention, Senator Amy Klobuchar gave a speech. And it's not going to go down in history as the worst speech ever, but to me, it embodies the worst thing most speakers do at political conventions, Democratic and Republican. And here's what she did. She sort of yelled and projected her voice the whole time. And, and it's annoying. Now, some of you who are new listeners or viewers to this program will say, well, T.J. you're just being sexist. Well, no, I criticized forcefully Donald Trump for doing the same thing and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani at the Republican convention. I've criticized Bernie Sanders for this. In contrast this with, for example, how Ronald Reagan would give a speech at conventions or how Bill Clinton gave his speech that the very same night as Senator Amy Klobuchar. So it's not a sex. Yes, there is sexism in the world. And yes, some people dismiss female politicians just because there's sex. But yelling isn't one of those things. If you yell when you're giving a speech, several things happen. It makes you monotone. It's grating. I don't care if you're a man or woman, high voice or low voice. And it tends to level you out and destroy your conversational quality. And it's just, it's hard to listen to the other thing. She. And you can find a video of her on Google, just Google it. Or on YouTube. They're everywhere. Take a look at it, and what you'll notice is everything is coming out at the same high volume, and then it's coming out at the high, same speed and it's the same tone. Nothing really varies that. And it's just awful. Her speech was, I don't know, 80% shorter than Bill Clinton's, but it seemed longer simply because of that one main flaw that then creates a lot of other problems. So please let that be a lesson to you. When you're giving a speech and you're far away from your audience, if you have a microphone on, you don't have to yell.
