TJ Walker says most meetings waste time because they're just information-sharing, not decision-making. His fix: after 20 seconds of a status update, ask "What decision do we need to make on this?" If there's no decision, stop talking and move on.

In your next meeting, try this. When someone gives an update, interrupt them after about 20 seconds and ask them one question: What decision do we need to make on this? If they can't answer, stop the update and move on. That one move will instantly change the quality of your meetings because most meetings are filled with updates that don't really lead anywhere. People speak, others listen, time gets used up, Nothing changes. The problem is not that people are bad at communicating. The problem is no one is actively pushing the meeting toward an outcome. Meetings are not information sharing sessions. They are decision-making sessions. And if no one is driving toward a decision, the meeting will talk to default. Ultimize.
