Raven Simone has been appointed the newest CO host of ABC's show the View. What's her secret to success? The View has been around coming on two decades, but it's still a television powerhouse. Women who get invited to host, if they're not already rich and famous, become rich and famous typically. It's a nice plum job in the world of TV journalism and entertainment entertainment. Raven Simone is the latest to get anointed to one of these co hosting slots. So how does she do it? Now, I must confess, I'm not particularly familiar with this talent. She was a child star on the Cosby Show. She's a singer, actress. But to me, the most significant factor in her being invited as a co host is that she was a guest on the show for 37 times. Now people come to me all the time saying, tj, I want my own show. I want to host a talk show. Great. Everybody does. You don't get anointed just as a talk show host one day. Typically you have to have other relevant experience. And these days, the most relevant experience is being a great guest on talk shows. Look at so many talk show hosts. They were guests for years and years and years before they ever got to be a host. That is the most common trajectory is be a great guest, be in the media all the time, and be great at it. If you're not a great guest, chances are unlikely you're going to be a great host. Or it's also unlikely you're going to be invited to be a host. So my advice to you who aspire to hosting your own show, try to be a guest on the shows you like, admire and respect. Certainly try to be a guest on any show you might want to host one day and be great every single time you're a guest.
