Why Criticism Doesn’t Break Trump’s Base

TJ Walker lists ten ways Trump has abandoned conservative principles, from trillion-dollar deficits to federal overreach, and asks why conservative commentators won't call it out.

Okay, I can understand why Democrats, progressives, liberals hate Donald Trump. I get it. But what I don't understand is why so called conservatives don't hate Donald Trump. Because he is arguably the most anti conservative president in the history of the United States. Let's look at the facts. Number one, he normalized trillion dollar deficits. Not in wartime, but just that's the way it's supposed to be. Number two, he ran Washington like a $7 trillion a year operation. That's not small government, that is gigantic government. Something conservatives are supposed to be against. Number three, he imposed a massive tax increase on the middle class and everyone else through tariffs. Conservatives were supposed to be against taxes. Number four, he socialized private companies, kind of communistic, like Fidel Castro. He had the federal government take an ownership stake in companies like intel. Something that conservatives would have blown their brains out if any Democrat had tried. Number five, he bypassed Congress to edge the country toward war. Conservatives used to believe in Article 1 regarding war powers. Number 6, he tried to deploy troops for domestic law enforcement, federalizing the National Guard over state objections. Courts blocked it. Conservatives used to fear this exact scenario. Number seven, he criminalized conservatism by turning it into loyalty to one man. He's shown that again and again. He doesn't really believe in the Constitution. You have to be loyal to him. He's attacked any judge, Republican, conservative, moderate, juries, anyone who doesn't show loyalty to him. That's not conservatism, that is strongman politics. Number eight, you can't claim law and order and vote for a convicted felon. A jury convicted Trump of Thor, 34 felony counts. Conservatives used to preach personal responsibility. Felonies used to matter. There used to be such a thing known as shame. Number nine, you can't preach Judeo Christian family values and excuse sexual abuse. A jury found Trump liable for sexual assault of E. Jean Carol, not to mention libeling her. He's had affairs with porn stars, serial infidelity. I'm sorry, but that's not moral conservatism. That's moral nihilism with Bible verses stapled on. Number 10, he taught conservatives to despise the Constitution when it restrains him. He's openly attacked election judges, juries, the constitutional process, anytime it didn't serve him. Conservatives are supposed to revere institutions, tradition, things our forefathers did. And they're not doing it here. It's time. A lot of conservatives and MAGA followers, people who call themselves that, are just honest. You're not a conservative anymore. You're Simply someone who hates liberals, hates Democrats, and anyone who's willing to poke a finger in their eye often enough. You're four. But I just wish we could forget this pretense that somehow you stand for any moral principles. Because a bad Hollywood screenwriter could not come up with a worse caricature of a politician to make mockery of conservative values than Donald Trump. I would ask you, what in the world does he actually do that in any way promotes conservative values? I get it that you don't like woke politicians. I get it that you think the left is somehow out of control. I get it that you're offended by a phrase like Black Lives matter. Okay? But do you really want to define your entire worldview, your entire core political philosophy of we want to be the guys who hate those guys the most because that is what modern conservatism has devolved to, at least as it's represented in the political sphere of politics in America. And I for one just wish somebody would be honest. I find it humorous to see leading cons, conservative theorists and pundits, and the people like Ben Shapiro and Tucker Carlson talk about their love of Judeo, Christian values, conservative values, and then never criticized Trump. Oh, he's our guy. I love Trump. He's great. Of course I quibble with him on this. And they spend the next two hours defining why tariffs are in fact an awful idea or just invading countries because you feel like it and you didn't want to bother asking Congress, not really a good idea, or invading Chicago, not really good. But oh, but we love Trump, really. You know, there's a place in the world for people who are pure political hacks who are like, I'm here to do the bidding of the party, they're paying me. But in a democracy, there's supposed to be a world for thought leaders who are trying to take principles, whether they're conservative principles, liberal principles, socialistic principles, if you, if that's your thing. It's not really my thing. Distill those principles into day to day activities in the news and what politicians are doing policies to give people guidance. And the world needs both. You need some political operatives, you need some genuine thought leaders, some intellectual leaders, some news commentators, some public intellectuals. And I am straining very hard to find honest public intellectuals who have mass audiences. I understand there are some, like William Crystal, who turned on Trump a long time ago, no one's ever heard of since. But when it comes to the so called conservatives with the millions and millions and millions of followers on YouTube and podcasting platforms and social media. They're trying to have it both ways. They want to pretend to be these leading conservative intellectual lights, and on the other hand, they're acting like 100% pure political hacks.
