Short YouTube clip by TJ Walker advising presenters not to open with a joke because humor’s effectiveness often depends on surprise; recommends placing humor in the middle or end so laughs feel spontaneous. Encourages the "TJ Walker habit."
Everybody likes a good laugh. But don't feel you have to start your speech or presentation with a joke, because so often people are expecting that, and so much of the value of humor is the surprise. If people know you're trying to be funny, it's not as funny. Far better to just say something in the middle of your presentation as if you weren't expecting a big laugh, and then it gets a laugh. Sometimes just the placement of a joke from the beginning to the middle or the end will make all the difference in the world in your favor. Please follow the TJ Walker habit.
