Running your Money Night

Todd Polke walks through Money Night, a weekly one-hour routine to build wealth: review goals and portfolio, audit last week's spending, plan next week's cash flow, automate investments, learn something new about money, and celebrate. He argues the habit compounds over time like fitness training, and that most people fail because they expect overnight results or chase shiny investments instead of treating money like a business.

now land. Uh, team, today I am talking to you about one of the foundational elements, one of the foundational teachings that if you apply this in your life and you do it consistently, I can guarantee you it is going to have exponential, uh, effects and a compounding effect nature on every other part of your life and especially on your wealth creation. This one foundational tool that I'm going to teach you right now, which comes down to the very basics of building a rock-solid and deep foundation when it comes to your wealth creation and comes towards creating financial freedom for your future, is probably one of the core elements which makes one of the differences between people who wind up building wealth and creating financial freedom versus don't— that versus Not doing it right, not getting to the results that they want. Now, here's some mistakes that I see a lot of people make when it comes to their investing and it comes to their wealth building. One of the biggest mistakes is that they they get themselves into they spend ten, twenty years, thirty years of their life, whatever it is, getting themselves in their current financial position, and then they expecting to change it overnight, right? So there now your trajectory can change overnight 100%, but your results may not change overnight. And so what some people do is that they, they, they try for 6 weeks and they give up and they go, oh, it doesn't work. My life hasn't changed all of a sudden and wealth investing doesn't work and it doesn't work and it's broken. It's not going to work for me. And they get in this whole sob story or victim mentality, things like that. That's the first thing. So we've got to realign our timeline. The next big thing is that people chase shiny objects. Once again, they've spent all their time getting themselves in their current financial situation. And then go looking for the silver bullet, which is going to change all their problems literally overnight. And that doesn't work because get rich quick— chasing shiny objects is all about get rich quick. Get rich quick is about short-term decision-making. Short-term decision-making sacrifices long-term wealth building. Okay, so we've got to have our timeline in the right place. We've got to have our head and our psychology in the right place. And so alongside that, People go looking for the shiny and the attractive, and they wind up skipping the foundational elements, which makes all the difference. You know, as we're growing, going and growing up through life, let's be clear: we have not been given the best foundation when it comes to wealth building. Right now, if anyone has had a different experience than that, I would love to know, and I'd love to know how you got it right. But when I grew up, like especially going through the education system. I was never taught anything about money, anything about wealth building, anything about investing, anything about creating financial freedom, anything about designing the life of my dreams. I didn't have parents who were wealthy that had the awareness or even the experience or the know-how to teach me how to build wealth and give me those kind of positive influences in terms of money and wealth building from a young age. Did anyone have any of those experiences in their life, whether it be education, society? And who didn't? Who had a similar upbringing to me where we just weren't taught anything about money? Right? In any way, shape, or form. And so I'd love to hear your experiences. So what that tends to create is that money and wealth building and investing seems to be this scary thing that sits over here somewhere. Other people do it, but I don't do it because it's too scary for me, but other people can do it. Or they wind up going, well, that's not the right time for me. And they use time as their excuse not to get through it. Or They use a situation where, oh, when my kids grow up, or when my boss gives me another raise, when my partner becomes more supportive, and that creates all these should-haves. Like, oh, I'll do it when this occurs, right? Rather than actually just getting on with it, really just to cover up for fear. And what that is all about is that wealth creation is not an experience that most people tend to have as they grow up through their life. It's something you have to learn, right? Right? Yeah. So oops, my chat just went away. Let's try and bring it back. There we go. Yeah. So I had a similar type of thing. I was taught money wasn't made from trees. My parents were made of money. Yep. Yep. Me too. Was anyone else like, what else were you taught? What other stupid things were you taught when it comes to growing up and comes to money and things like that? And so one of the things that I am massive on is normalizing wealth creation. Because when we start normalizing wealth creation and financial freedom, no longer is it this big scary thing which sits out here. It is something which is in our control. It is something that is part of our day-to-day life, just the same as, you know, uh, going to work, just the same as eating, just the same as relationships, just the same as anything like that. And as soon as you begin to normalize wealth creation in your life, your whole relationship with money begins to change. What I'm going to show you right now is one of the best ways that you can begin normalizing wealth creation and financial freedom in your life. Now, who's up for that, by the way? Who's up for creating financial freedom to be normal? Not working to pay the bills for the next 50 years of your life normal. That's a shit normal. Like, stuff that for a joke. I prefer financial freedom normal. Is anyone with me on that? Who prefers their normal to be financial freedom? Have time freedom, choice freedom, opportunity freedom. Like to be able to live a life unlimited by income. Is anyone with me on that? Now, so what I want to talk to you about tonight is all about something that I call the money night. Now, I have taught this over the years, and my investors who have taken it and they've applied it. And by the way, if any of my yeah, we got some yeses here. We got some absolutely there. We got some hand raises that are going on over here. Okay, so a few of you are on the train with me there, right? Psychology. Now, what I'm going to talk to you about is the money night. Now, by the way, those of you who are my existing clients, I can't quite see who's online with me at the moment. Those of you who are my existing clients that are online with me right now, which among you have done the money night? And you know it's a super effective tool and it's been a game changer for you. So I can't see who's online with me at the moment. I'm using another bit of software so I can stream in about 4 different places at the same time. But if you are a client of mine, if you're watching this later and you have taken the Money Night and you've applied it, I want to know what it was like for you and what you got out of it. Let people know how important this is. So what this Money Night, how this Money Night came about and how this was created. What I tended to find in my own portfolio and after working with many, many, many thousands and tens of thousands of people over the year is that people would tend to get to their money in usually about one of a few different times. A, when there's a bill to pay. B, when it's tax time. Or C, when it's too late. Is anyone guilty of one of those 3 cardinal sins of wealth building that the only time you actually look at your money is when there's a bill today, bill to pay, tax time, when it's too late, or when there's emergencies. Probably one of 4 different places when people start to manage their money and take care of their finances any way, shape, or form. Other than that, what tends to happen when it comes to money is that money just kind of tends to come into your life, then it just flows back out again, comes in and it flows back out again, right? That's what tends to happen. And so you are not in control of your finances. Right? You are not treating your money with respect. You are not actually treating your financial life like a business. And this is one of the biggest mindset shifts that you have to make is that your financial life is a business and you've got to treat it like that. If you treat it like a hobby, then guess what? You're only going to expect hobby-like results. One of the things I say to all my investors is, why would you be given more money to manage if you can't manage what you've already got? Okay? I say to my investors all the time. I'm going to say it again. Why would you be given more money to manage if you can't manage what you've already got? And most people I've met do not know how to manage their money effectively. Now, I could go into how to manage your money and create money maps and all this type of stuff, and I've got lots of trainings on that. I'll do that at other points in time, but we want to take a step back before that. What we want to take the step back and do is establish a brand new wealth creation habit. Okay, that's what we want to do first. Now, um, because habits are what, uh, are what make or break your success. Success in life is not about the big one-off crazy outrageous thing that you go do once off. It's about the small seemingly insignificant things that you do on a consistent basis that stack up and stack up and stack up until they avalanche over in this thing called wealth and success. Like, that's the first thing that we've got to do. And what you've got to start doing to begin with, if you're sitting there going, I need to make some changes in my finances, you've got to start showing up for your, your financial future, right? Before— many of you know, before I got involved in the wealth creation world, in the investing world, I was a personal trainer, right? I've always been a teacher at heart. I just used to teach around, um, health and well-being. And, uh, I used to see people come along and they'd make all these They make all these New Year's resolutions, and January was a very busy time in the gym, right? People come along and go, "Oh, New Year's turning over new new leaf and New Year's resolutions and all this type of stuff." And then they go, "Oh, I'm gonna lose all this weight," or "I've got this big I've got this holiday. I want my bikini body. I want to do this." Whatever the hell it might be. And so, but then this is what would start to happen: people would start stacking up so many barriers in the way of their success. It's not funny. Well, I'm gonna so I've gotta go start this new routine at the gym, and so before I even start there, well, I better go and I need to go get the right diet. So I'm gonna go see a nutritionist first and foremost. I'm gonna do that, and I'm gonna get the right diet. But they can't see me for three weeks, so of course I can't start until that point in time. I'm gonna research the very best personal trainer because I don't get a personal trainer. Get a Research them and some money to be able to go and do it, right? So people need to be able to go and do that. And then they start going, okay, well, I need some new outfits because you gotta look cool when you're in a gym. So I need to go get some new tank tops and I need to get some new shoes. And what if I don't have the right shoes? What if I need orthotics? I better go book my, my appointment with podiatrist to go and do that. And I need a new towel, any new water bottle, I need some new headphones, but I don't want any old headphones. I want noise-canceling headphones because I heard They're the best ones to have at the gym, noise-canceling ones. And so they set up all these different things, these barriers of getting started. Now, by the way, has anyone been guilty of this in any part of their life? Because I know I have, that's for sure. Where what they really needed to do was stop making excuses and make the habit of just showing up at the gym. And even if you show up at the gym for 5 minutes and you turn around and you walk back out again, but the next day you show up for 6 minutes, That is a win in my book. Even if day number one you walk to one light post, lamppost, right? But then day number two you walk to the second one, right? That is a win in my book because what you are starting to do is that you are starting to establish a brand new habit in your life. And that's what you need to do with your finances. You need to establish a brand new set of habits. Now, this is one of the most valuable habits that you could possibly run in your life, and it's called a money night. Now, I'm going to share with you the quick guide around it. And now, Now, if you want a copy of the guide, just type in the word guide and my team will get it over to you. Okay, so if you want a copy of the guide, type in the word guide into the comments and my team will get it over to you. But in the meantime, I'm just going to share my screen and let's pull this up. Okay, so if you can see this, just type in the word seen into the chat. Let me know that you can see it. Okay. So this is how you run a money night. Now what I'm going to do here is that I'm going to take each one of these step by step and I'm going to talk you through the key things that you want to focus on doing in this money night. Okay, um, that— and, and doing this, and you do this every single week, it's going to take you an hour. If you do this, it'll change your financial life from here on in. I can guarantee it, right? So the first thing you're going to do is that when you're running a money night is that you're going to review your personal financial goals and investments. Now, why would you do that? Why would your first thing that you want to do is go and review your personal financial goals and investments? Why would that be the very first thing to do? What do you think the answer to that might be? Why would that be the very first thing to do? Why would that be the very first thing to do? Very simply, the reason is, is because it's going to help you realign to your outcomes and realign to the strong reason why you were doing this in the first place. Okay, so that everything else that you do, every decision you make from that moment on, Every— yeah, influences mindset. 100% right. So every decision you make from that moment on, any thought process that you have is aligned towards your highest outcome that you want to be able to create. So that's the very first thing you're going to do. The other reason is that it always puts this front and center. You're programming your subconscious mind that building wealth and creating financial freedom for you is something that's important. Okay, so you're reprogramming your financial, your mind at this point in time. And so when you start to influence your subconscious mind that this is important, then your mind goes to work, your unconscious subconscious mind goes to work to start finding ways to fulfill your greatest outcome that you want to be able to create. So that's the very first thing you're going to do. Now, if you're going to do this for the first time, your very first thing you might do is go out and set some financial goals, right? So some personal and financial goals for yourself, your family, and your investments, right? That's the very first thing that you want to go and do. Now, the next thing that you're going to do is that you're going to review your previous week's finances. Now, this is— this series system that I've set up here, this process has everything to do with that you are in a habitual process of doing this. That's what it has everything to do with. Okay? Now, if you haven't, you're not aware of where your finances are or things like that, then you might spend some time getting clear on some budgets and getting clear on some finances and things like that so you can actually have something to be able to review. But again, don't set up all these barriers in your life. Just start by getting started. And if that's having a money night where you're going to spend the entire time just tracking what, listing down what some of your expenses are and things like that, then that's a Great use of time. But when you're in process, the first thing you're going to do is going to review your previous week's finances. And the reason you're going to do this is very simply, you are going to make sure that everything was supposed to come in came in. So any income that was supposed to come in from your personal life, from your work, from your investments came in, right? You're also going to make sure that everything that was supposed to go out went out. So you're going to make sure that your system that you applied from the previous week actually affected as it was supposed to. Okay, so that's the first thing that you're going to be doing after you reviewed your goals and you reviewed your investment portfolio so that you're on top of everything. Okay, so you just want to make sure that everything happened how it was supposed to so you can tick off in your mind that it was done. The next thing you're going to do is that you're going to look forward to what is happening this next week coming. What income is supposed to be coming in? Where is it supposed to be coming in? What expenses are supposed to be going out? What bills need to be paid? What moves in your portfolio or investments you're going to make? And are there any micro goals that you are going to take within this current week? Now, a micro goal might be something like, okay, I have a plan. I'm going to dollar cost average into the cryptocurrency world. I'm going to put $50 in a week. Okay, well, what am I buying? When am I buying it? How am I doing it? And how am I going to set it up and automate it? Right? So it might be one of those micro goals. Your micro goal might be that you are, when you're shopping, you're going to be going to, you're going to go out to invest the savings that you might have made from making, buying some things at a discount, right? It could be something like that. So it could be renegotiating one bill, right? For example, it could be something like that. What's your micro goal? So looking forward to what's happening. What's supposed to come in? What's supposed to go out? And what's your micro goals for the week happening ahead? The next thing you're going to do is automate it. So you're going to use internet banking. You're going to use dollar cost averaging programs in crypto, for example. That's what you're going to do. You're going to go make sure you get the phone number of the insurance company you're going to go negotiate with or whatever that micro goal might be for you. And you set it up. You use technology, automate it, and then you can forget. Forget about it, and it's done until the next week. The next thing you're going to do is you're going to learn something new. Now, I set this up to operate within an hour. Once you've got it now to begin with, it might take you a little bit longer. Once you're up and rolling, it might only take you 30 minutes to do all this. Well, but you've scheduled aside an hour to do something around your financial future. Why would you waste it? So the next thing you're going to do is you're going to learn something new, even if it's just one thing. So I always said a thing like, I'm always reading a new article, I'm reading a new book. If you read 5 pages of a book, if you watch one YouTube video for 10, 15 minutes, the compound nature of that stacking effect of learning and learning and learning and learning the language of money to normalize wealth creation and reprogram your subconscious mind that this is something that's valuable for you that you committed to doing is So invaluable, it's not funny. So don't waste the opportunity. And then you know what? Finally, celebrate. Now you might go, well, what do you mean, Todd? How do I celebrate? Well, if you're doing this with your partner, then why don't you do it over a glass of wine, right? Maybe you're going to go do that. Stay, stay away from Costco. Yeah, maybe you're going to do it over a glass of wine. Just don't get sloshed before you start the money night, right? So do that afterwards. Or maybe you start up and you watch a movie afterwards, or I don't know what it is, right? Depending on when you're gonna be doing it or depending when you're gonna make it happen, right? It could be your Money Mondays or or Finance Thursdays or Finance Fridays or whatever you want to call it. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's a Saturday morning, then you go out for a brekkie afterwards. I don't know what it is. Celebrate the crap out of these things because when you celebrate. You got following through with what you said you were going to do. Again, you are rewarding yourself on a consistent ongoing basis, right? And those micro rewards along the way of just giving yourself dopamine hits at regular points in time in your— as you're doing something that's great for your future sets up your nervous system to win, right? I was listening to some studies. I wish I had it on me right now, but there was a YouTube video and some studies I dropped to all my my investors. And what it was talking about is that the determinant to success had everything to do with how you go through the journey. It's not the outcome what it is, right? It's how you're actually going through the journey, right? And that going through the journey was all about how do you program your nervous system to love the process, not the outcome. And that was actually found to be the biggest determinant of people succeeding in life. And I've certainly done in my own life. It's something now, as you go through this guide, I'm hopefully, hopefully I haven't, uh, it looks like I might have, but as you go through this guide, What you're going to see here is a few more sections. It's going to have each of the sections you're going to be able to— for you what to do in what order. It's going to then going to have, well, what are your top 3 financial moves that you're going to— that your financial goals so that you're actually keeping track of these on a regular basis. So you're going to review your personal goals. You're going to review last week's finances. You're going to review this week's finances. You're going to automate it. What's your learning goal? And then you're going to celebrate, right? And that's what you're going to focus on doing. And under each of these, Like, what are you automating? How are you automating it? What are you doing this week's finances? What income is coming in? What expenses need to be paid? So you're actually listing it down, you're noting this, and you might have one of these sheets for every single day that you do this. And you might print them out, you might do it digitally, you might have a money book, whatever it actually might be for you. This, if you apply it and you apply consistently— by the way, if you haven't got a copy of this guide, as I said, type in the word guide and my team will get it over to you. If you apply this strategy, this habit in your financial life, I can guarantee you it'll transform your financial future. The stacking effect and compound nature of doing this consistently cannot be overrated. Cannot be overrated. It is one of the most foundational habits you could possibly apply. So what I'd love to know is what you guys got out of that, what you found interesting, what you found useful. And while you're typing that in there, Once you have your foundation in place, then you got to focus on building wealth, right? So you build your foundation, and then now it's time to get your money out there working hard for you. So you're not just spending working your life, working hard all your all your life for your money, right? That's what the game is going to be all about. Now, what you may have seen is that I have an event coming up. Over the next couple of weeks. It's going to be happening in 2 weeks' time. Let me just get the date. I can't quite remember when it is. It's going to be happening on the 27th and 28th of April. And this is the Off-Market Deal Summit. So I ran this once last year. It was fully booked out. It was fully scheduled. And people had an epic time at it and they learned so much when it comes to investing and wealth building and especially all about deals. What this Off-Market Deal Summit is all about is how do you find those off-market deals which make more profit and make more cash flow from you? I was talking to one of my private clients today and what he was saying to me was that he's been speaking to a lot of his friends and families and things like that around how we're working together and what he's doing and some of the deals that are coming across the table. And last night I brought to my group, introduced some people that do some great stuff in investing, right? And they're making returns of between 18 up to 35% per annum. Okay, let me say those numbers again: 18 to 35% per annum returns with security. Now, firstly, who likes the idea of those kind of deals? Does anyone like those kind of deals, right? Secondly, do you think those deals just come to the everyday person? Like you know in the share market and on property, you know, real estate.com and things like that. They don't. Like the best deals are always done off market, and you're never going to find that deal unless you know people that know people that know people that are effectively in the industry, right? So this off market deal summit, here's what I'm going to be doing. I'm going to be breaking down how do you build a deal flow system so that you can actually go out and you can. find those off-market deals. You can learn how to do due diligence on those off-market deals. You learn what it takes to execute on those off-market deals and how to strategize with them to make more profit and more cash flow in your portfolio so you can accelerate your results. That's what the game is going to be all about. I'm going to be taking a number of the deals that I've been able to bring to my crew and we're going to break those down together as we go through this Off-Market Deal Summit. Now it's absolutely true. It's a Well, so you can just kind of grab that at the same time. So come along, it's going to be an epic couple of days that we're going to spend together, talk oils and talking about— yeah, freeze. I, I— this is rainforest internet, people. So sorry. Um, uh, rainforest internet, nothing I can do. I know, frozen internet's not working. I'm aware. Sorry everyone, I'm trying to find solutions. It's not easy where I live. And yeah, woe is me, right? But anyway, team, if you want to come along to that event, it's the Off Market Deal Summit. I've put the registration link in the comments there. It's in the description of this video as well. Would love to see you there. It's going to be an epic 2 days and I can't wait to share it with you. Other than that, go and enjoy the rest of your Thursday. I would love to see... It's something about the Deal Summit. Did you not hear anything I just said? Quick snapshot. We are going to be running a 2-day off-market deal summit. In that deal summit— there's some balloons that popped up— in that deal summit, I'm going to be sharing with you how to create a deal flow system so you get access to off-market deals that make more profit and more cash flow for you. I'm going to be breaking down a bunch of the deals that I've been able to bring to my investors that are doing 10%, 15%, 20%, 30% returns per annum. I'm going to be talking about how you do due diligence on these deals, and I'm going to be pulling these deals apart to show you what the ins and outs and why I chose to bring them to my community. That's what it's going to be about. We're going to talk about strategy. We're going to talk about building a deal flow system. We're going to talk about how do you do effective due diligence. We're going to talk about how do you execute on these deals like crazy. to accelerate your results, right? That's what the whole session is going to be about. It's a 2-day event. I put the, um, the link into the comments. I've also popped it in the description. It's absolutely for free. We ran one of these last year, was boss, and I can't wait to run again. So if you want to be a part of that, go and, um, I look forward to seeing you there. Other than that, go and enjoy the rest of your, um— Yeah, get in on it. It's going to be boss. It really will be. Uh, other than that, go and enjoy the rest of your Thursday evening. And I have a secret. I just bought a new desk. I'm a little bit excited by it. This is my weirdness of getting excited about those sit-stand desks and beautiful wooden things like that. Cannot wait. I'm gonna go build it right now. That's exactly what I'm doing. Oh, next time I run a live, I'll show you my brand new desk because I'll be very proud of it. I can tell you that right now. So that's what I'll be doing for the rest of my night. Much to the disdain of my family, probably. All right, everyone, go and enjoy your Thursday. Much love, everyone. Talk soon. Bye.
