Tom Burton and a fellow economist debate whether the US economy is headed for a soft landing or recession. Consumer confidence just dropped sharply, but they disagree on what it means: Tom sees uncertainty, while the other speaker estimates recession risk below 50% and points to yield-curve spreads as a positive sign.

We had that big drop in consumer confidence earlier this week, which was. And my take on it was, I believe that drop is more from the uncertainty and all the change that's going on versus a fear that the economy is going to crash.
Yeah, I think, I think the risk of a recession is still there, but I think it's less than 50%. So I, you know, if you look at Tom yield curve spreads and some other indicators that we tend to look at for recessions, it does look like we are, you know, moving towards that proverbial soft landing.
