Tom Burton explains the shift from traditional e-commerce (self-serve website purchases) toward AI-driven or agentic commerce where purchases can be made directly within AI conversations. He describes capabilities like splitting purchases across vendors, searching for best price or delivery criteria, and predicts a substantial migration of online buying to AI-based purchasing while acknowledging e-commerce will still have a role.

So what PayPal is introduced is the ability to incorporate that into these AI based purchases that are there. What does E commerce mean? Basically it means you're going to a website and you're basically making a self serve purchase, a transaction at that point. So what agentic commerce or AI commerce, AI driven commerce changes is the ability to make purchases right within your AI conversation? Let's say I'm having a conversation and I have 10 items or whatever that I'm looking at or having a conversation about. Could you actually then make some of those purchases from company A, some from company B, some from company C? Could you have it then go look for the best price and then make the purchases accordingly based around maybe price or delivery time or whatever other criteria? To me it's just a foreshadowing of how the world of online commerce will be moving. It'll be moving from traditional E commerce. Doesn't mean that E commerce won't exist. I think there's a time and place for it, but I think a large percentage will end up moving to AI based purchasing.
