The PMI jumped to 4.6, the strongest in years and the first expansion reading in 12 months. But analysts warn January re-ordering ahead of expected tariffs may be inflating the number, leaving unclear whether the surge reflects real strength or seasonal noise.
But yeah, what's going on in.
The economy today? Well, it looks like PMI jumps to the strongest that it's been in a few years. It did look like it might have some sort of, I guess, I won't say false, but sort of a unique situation where you had January and people were trying to get ahead of potentially more tariff price increases. Mike, what's your thought on that?
Yeah, that was the big headline number as far as these key economic indicators that we and everyone relies on. Yeah, it jumped up to what, 4.6 percentage or just whole points and that was the biggest jump that it had seen in what was it since 2022. And it was the, the first time it was in expansion territory in a full year, in 12 months. So net, net definitely a positive for the industrial manufacturing sector. But to your point, you know, there was analysts, you know, galore that pointed out that that reordering, which tends to happen in January was definitely a factor there. And if you look back at the last few January's for the pmi, it does see a considerable jump in January, but this was a much bigger jump than those previous Januarys. So I don't think the reordering is the only factor here.
