How can businesses use YouTube?

Tom Guarriello asks early adopters how businesses should use YouTube to reach customers. He's gathering ideas about what content works, how it shapes brand perception, and what companies could actually do on the platform. He'll feature viewer responses in a TED talk on video blogging.

Hey guys, it's Tom. Yesterday I asked a question about a presentation, a very quick presentation. It's not even really a presentation, it's a little mini seminar that I'm doing at the TED conference on video blogging on YouTube and asked you why people should video blog. And thanks, I got some great responses. And now the question I want to ask you is about businesses. So if a business were to have a video blog out here on YouTube, what would your reaction be? What would— how would you feel about any company that you do business with having a video blog on YouTube that they used to communicate with you. What would you like to see on something like that? What would you think of it and what kinds of things do you think businesses could do with YouTube using it for a way of communicating with their customers? You know, shamelessly asking you, as somebody pointed out in yesterday's video, shamelessly asking you guys to write my presentation for me. Of course, you know I'm kidding, but, you know, I'm very interested because we're out here early on. Believe it or not, we're still at the early— you know, there's something in the technology world called the adoption curve, and, you know, what you have are the people who are the first ones to use a technology, the very earliest adopters, are interesting in many ways, but they're interesting because, you know, we're out here trying out things that a few years from now are going to seem commonplace to everybody out there who's, you know, it's kind of like TiVo, you know, it's kind of like a cable modem, you know. Uh, how early did you have your— did you have broadband? Were you an early adopter of broadband or a late adopter? Were you an early adopter of TiVo or a late adopter? I'm a chronic early adopter of things. I like to get new technology. And like to get them early. So I think those of us who are out here on YouTube, you know, we're probably still— amazingly enough, we're probably still in the early adopter stage of this process, at least those of us who are making videos and uploading them. So what I'm interested in is the early adopter point of view on what do you think would be a good use of YouTube by people who are in positions to make decisions about businesses. So thanks again, as always, and see you again soon. Bye. Oh, and one more thing. If you want to make a video response to this, go ahead and do so, and I'm going to try to include some of these video responses in my presentation itself at the TED conference. So if you're interested, make a quick video, and maybe you too— no, I'm kidding. I would love to get videos, and I would love to be able to use them in my presentation. So thanks a lot. Bye.
