Will Any Of This Endure?

Tom Guarriello asks whether vlogs fade away or stick around. Most of his old videos get no views, except a World of Warcraft one that still shows up in search. He wonders if creators should even try to make their work last, or if that's just nostalgia.

Well, hi, it's Tom Guarriello. You know, I've been thinking about video blogging because that's what I do, video blog. And the question that came to my mind is, will any of this endure? Is anything that we're doing online here anything other than just a momentary kind of a, you know, sort of a meteor, you know, shooting through the, I don't know, vlogosphere on the internet for a moment and then it's gone. And it doesn't matter if it's just a vlog, it's also, you know, something more entertaining that you might be creating, um, you know, a skit or, uh, anything, anything that we're doing here in this kind of context. It, first of all, do you care if it endures or not? Is the nature of what we're doing here so kind of ephemeral, you know, so by design short-lived that it doesn't matter if it endures? And if it does matter to you that it endures, what's your thoughts about how to go about trying to encourage this work to be preserved and endured. You know, if you look back at any of the old videos that you've made, you see that people don't watch old videos. People only watch things that are relatively new. Oh, you know, occasionally people will do a search and they'll find something that you did on a particular topic that they're interested in. I made a video about World of Warcraft, for example, um, I don't know, a year ago, and that video continues to get views and comments. But most of my other videos, you know, just don't get— the old videos don't just don't get a lot of views. So it feels like, um, you know, your work doesn't endure. Now, is there a better way for us to package that work so that it would endure? I mean, I guess probably if we were to put a, a compilation of work together. I know people like Nolts have put together DVDs of their videos. Um, people don't buy them, but, uh, at least in that way you're editing and curating your work and putting it together in a way that says to somebody, look, this is designed to endure, versus this stuff, which is, you know, probably not designed to endure. So I'm interested in your thoughts. Will any of this endure? Do you care if it endures? Should it Endure? You know, I know we're not writing Great Expectations here, but you know, what are your thoughts about that? And I'll see you again soon. Take it easy. Bye-bye.
