In this solo monologue, Tom Guarriello, Ph.D., marks YouTube’s second anniversary, recalling Jawed Karim’s inaugural video from the zoo and noting the platform’s rapid growth into a massive, diverse community. He references recent conversations with Perry Urban featured on the eNation channel and directs viewers to the Voicing World channel for deeper context. Shifting focus from the well‑known technical frustrations (e.g., encoding, comment moderation, streaming quality), Tom asks the audience to imagine a perfectly functioning YouTube and to identify fundamental, non‑technical aspects of the service—its structure, operation, and user interaction—that they would like to see changed. The video ends with a direct invitation for viewers to share their ideas.

Well, hey guys, it's Tom. Today's an interesting day. It's YouTube's birthday. It is. 2 years ago today, Jawed posted the very first video ever on YouTube from the zoo. And you can find it over on his page, which I'll put over here in the comments. And, um, 2 years old. It's fascinating to think that in 2 years YouTube has gone from a video posted by one of the 3 co-founders from the zoo to the zoo that it's become today. This amazing, amazing, indescribable community of whatevers beyond, beyond anyone's imagination, I think. And I've been part of these conversations that Perry Urban— Perry— I've been part of these conversations that Perry Urban referred to in his recent eNation video, and there's going to be a lot of discussion about the issues that are emerging from those conversations. I encourage you all to head over to the Voicing World channel, which I'll put up in the description here, to learn more about what those conversations are about. But I wanted to just ask you some— a couple of fundamental questions about aspects of YouTube that you think are in need of change. Forget about the technical problems for a second, if it's possible. I know we've all been very frustrated with YouTube's technical problems. But let's put those over to the side. Let's assume that everything that YouTube, uh, that every aspect of YouTube service worked and worked perfectly. Comments, video encoding, uh, speed, uh, instant messaging speed, uh, blocking, spam filtering, all of the technical aspects stereo sound, better quality video. Let's put all of those in one bucket and say, let's assume all of that worked. If all of that worked, what else would there be about YouTube that you would like to see changed? What is it that you would say, okay, now that we've gotten all the noise out of the system, all the technical glitches that are, for whatever reason, have been plaguing this system since its inception, if all of those things were gone, what would be the things that you would say, okay, now we can turn our attention to blank, these more, let's call them fundamental issues in regard to the way this service is structured, the way it's operated, the way you get to interact with it? What things would you like to see changed? So that's my question for you for today. Thanks a lot and see you soon. Bye.
