10 scholarship costing mistakes on social media

Trenton Luera presents a YouTube video listing the 10 most common social-media mistakes college football recruits make on X and explains how to fix them to attract more scholarship interest. Early recommendations include posting consistently (2+ times/week), using emojis judiciously (formatting-supportive, not excessive), keeping clips short (ideally ≤30s, often 5–10s), crafting compelling captions targeted to coaches, directing calls-to-action appropriately, and building a repeatable posting process to achieve predictable views and coach engagement.

X is where 90% of college football recruiting happens. So if you're making big mistakes on there, you're not going to get recruited. So today I'm going to go over the 10 most common mistakes I see families and recruits make on X. So that way you can fix them and ultimately get more interest, more scholarship offers, just like I did. And so the first one is inconsistent posting. You need to post consistently on X. It's not just a, oh yeah, we'll post, you know, a bunch during season and then nothing during the off season. Like you need to be posting consistently. Mar minimum inside your first scholarship is one to two times per week. We're going to probably bump that up to two plus per week because it is such an important part of the process. You're building a brand, you're building a ton of good associations. You get this algorithm thing going on. It's just this insane place where just by posting you're just getting a ton of benefits that you can't even really wrap your head around. And it's just so clearly beneficial. It boosts the amount of replies that you get on X. On email, overall, interest follows views. It just. There's so many benefits to it. And I mean, we've had kids that just consistently post and one of them we'll talk about a lot because he just crushed on X as an Arizona quarterback that we worked with that committed to a D2 school over in New Mexico. And I mean, he would post and coaches that he was talking to would see them and be like, hey, Jay, it's really solid post. Loved it this and that and would start even he would got ghosted by them before and then they were reaching back out to them just because of a simple post. And so you have to stay consistent with it because you never know who's seeing your post. The second one is emoji overload. So these next two are about emojis. This one's just about doing too much emojis here because I think emojis can be used really well in posts. I love using them in posts because they stand out immediately. Like, text is text. All my tweets I write just for like my personal stuff are regular text because that's just, that's just my style. But if you're trying to stand out, use emojis. They're. They're colorful. They add this, like, unique look to them. And so I recommend using emojis, but you don't want to do it too much. You don't want to use just a bunch of emojis and look kind of weird. You just want to use them in the right places. So that way it kind of formats your text a little bit. And then also using the wrong emojis you don't want to use like certain emojis that obviously inappropriate emojis if you can think about the ones that I'm referencing there. But also ones that don't necessarily say high status ones. Like the hundred emoji to me is kind of one of those more like face emojis you probably don't want to really use. But like for example, one of one of my best posts that got over 10,000 views when I was getting recruited towards the end of my recruiting process and really got me a lot of the scholarship offers that I got in the junior college process was basically used a tape measure for my measurables, used like the books emoji for my grades and then I use something else I can't remember off the top of my head. But those were like proper emojis. They format the text really well. It made it super clear and so you want to be making sure you're using the right emojis and not just spamming a bunch. The fourth one is lengthy edits. You you want your content to be extremely short and to the point. Like if you're posting a five second clip that's fine. It doesn't have to be super long. Like it doesn't have to be this two minute compilation of your your Tuesday workout. Instead it should be short clips of like here's my bench PR, here's my squat PR, here's my 40 time, here's five clips of me throwing the other day or here's me working out the other day and it should be nothing longer than a minute. 30 seconds is really like my recommended if you're doing a compilation and then most of them are going to be short little 5 to 10 stuff. And so keeping it really short to the point because again coaches aren't going to really watch that much and really you're just trying to capture their attention that first couple seconds to get curiosity. So that way they check out your profile, check out your highlights and then ultimately give you follow or respond to your DM or message you or something like that. The fifth one is we captions. This is probably the biggest one. I think this is the one that we do the best of and I think it has the outside of the content that you post. Like this has the second most impact on how well your post does because your caption is what leads the people into your content. Because if your caption sucks, if it's check out my highlights, your highlights are not. I've never seen a check out my highlight in my for you page ever. Like, it doesn't pop up because those, those don't do well. You need to be posting with good captions that give people a clear idea of what they're going to watch and make them want to watch it. And especially you're trying to, you're not trying to make anyone watch it. You're trying to make college coaches watch it. So you want your caption to speak directly to them and cut through all that noise like they're scrolling on Twitter. You need to give them a reason to stop and ultimately watch that highlight video. So you really need to think about that. You, if you're spending any amount of time on anything, it should be the captions. Spend time instead of just writing it. Five seconds, take five minutes, really think about it. Make sure it's properly formatted and really catches people's attention. And trust me that just that will probably, if not 5x probably 10, 15, 20x amount of views that you get on your posts. And I can say that with, with a high degree of certainty just because we have recruits that get thousands of views on their post every single time they post. And honestly, if we're under a thousand views, I'm like, okay, something, something's wrong here. We need to fix that. So you can definitely, definitely get, get good results just by focusing on your caption. The sixth one is writing to the wrong audience. Again, this is kind of along the caption line of what I was saying that you need to make sure you're creating the content for coaches. You're not creating it for media, you're not creating it for fun, you're not creating it for your friends. It is for coaches. And so you need to be thinking along those lines of keeping it very simple to the point, showing them what they want. Because if you're not creating what they want, what they want to see, and what will make them impressed, then you're not going to get interest from your post. And that's the whole point of posting at the end of the day. Again, irrelevant content. Like, you don't need to be posting random stuff. You don't need to be. I see a lot of recruits do. Is they like. Or at least some, I guess is. They'll. They'll do like regular tweets. You shouldn't be doing regular, regular tweets of like I'm on my grind or like, you know, my time will come. Like, no one, I mean, just truthfully, not a lot of people care. Like, just post stuff that is going to get you recruited. That like, that is what you're trying to do at the end of the day. And so content, you need to be posting video, pictures, proof, stuff that coaches want to see. That's the whole idea behind it. And so anything outside of that is irrelevant. Throwing a pity party about, hey, this is, you know, this is my situation probably isn't going to get you a whole ton of interest. And so instead just posting the stuff of what you're doing related to football, to recruiting, to you as a student athlete, your brand is going to help you. Missing call to actions in the sense that you're not directing coaches to your post. You can tag coaches in a post. It's not necessarily like a required thing, but you want to make sure you're directing coaches to your post in some kind of sense, whether you're sharing it with them, be it privately on X or tagging them because you want to kind of teach them that you're constantly posting as well as you can just directly call their call their attention. You don't want to leverage this too much because once you do it too much, then it becomes, okay, I'm just going to ignore this kid. But if you do it in the right stuff, especially if you do it on like more of your content, that is more, I guess like full season highlights, like the best content that you have, whether it's like extremely high PR or like a really impressive video or your, your best highlights, that's kind of stuff you would want to do this on. You don't want to do it for, you know, just a little tiny box jump that you did the other day. So that is, that is a little tool that you can use. And then one of the biggest ones is the lack of predictability. And so I talked a lot about captions, I talked about content, I talked about the views that we get and how if a post gets under a thousand views, I know something went wrong. And that's the biggest thing is you need predictability in whatever you're doing in recruiting because it's such a stressful, frustration, frustrating time that if you don't have the system that you can repeat of like, cool, I know the caption is this parts and the content is this parts. It'll perform well. That's what we created at your first scholarship. And that's why I recommend that you try to find that predictability, that ease of just being able to repeat over time again and get these amazing results of thousands of views and ultimately the right views of coaches and get these follows and these responses. Because once you get those predictability then you can just pull that lever over, you can press that button time and time and time again and just get the same results and it makes it a lot, lot easier. And so make sure you find that process that works for you. If you're just looking to skip the line, get all the cheat codes, unlock the playbooks and really just ramp things up, then you can work with us directly. We'll essentially take you on, build out a customized game plan for you. On our game plan call or talk about your current situation as well as what your goals are.
