A short YouTube advice clip by Trent (a former college quarterback) aimed at high school football players about how to make varsity. Trent promises three things coaches look for; this chunk covers the first: effort. He emphasizes coaches often prefer a player who consistently gives maximum effort over a slightly more talented player who lacks effort, and recommends showing 100% effort play after play.

If you're a high school football player trying to make varsity or start on varsity, these are three things coaches are looking for in their players. And if you show them, you have a good chance of making the team. Now, if you don't know who I am, I'm Trent, where I'm a former college quarterback, and now I help high school football players just like you. If you want more content like this, be sure to drop a follow. The number one thing is effort. And the good thing is coaches say this all the time, like, give good effort. Too often, especially in high school, people worry about everything else except effort. They worry about how strong they are, how fast they are, how good they look. They don't worry about, like, hey, am I giving the most effort that I can? And it shows. And so if you can put in the effort, I guarantee you a lot of high school coaches would rather have a kid who puts in a ton of effort and may lack a little bit of skill somewhere else, but can make it up in the amount of effort that they put in and have a kid who has, you know, just a little bit more talent than you, but hardly ever puts in the effort or it's. You always have to get the effort out of them. It just can cause a lot of energy drain. And so just showing effort on a daily basis, play after play, just always putting 100% effort out there.
