Trent Luera (former college quarterback) presents a short recruiting-advice video aimed at high-school football players. He recommends an empirical outreach test to determine which college division level fits a player: send roughly 100 direct messages to coaches at each division level (D1 FBS, D1 FCS, D2, D3, NAIA — juco optional) via Twitter/X, then judge where you receive responses. Luera frames any response from a division as evidence you have a shot there; no responses suggests that division is unlikely.

Are you high school football players struggling to still find what division level is right for you? In this video, I'm going to break down exactly what you need to do so that we can figure out what division level you even belong to and which one you're more likely to get an actual scholarship to first. If you don't know who I am, I'm Trent Loire. I'm a former college quarterback and now I help kids just like you do the same. So if you want more recruiting tips and tricks like this, be sure to drop me a follow. So now my favorite way to reach out to college coaches is Twitter DMs or X if you're a loser. So what you're going to want to do is reach out to a bunch of different college coaches and to figure out which division level is the right one for you. You're going to want to out to 100 different coaches from each division level. So 100 from D1 FBS, 100 from D1 FCS, 100 from D2, 100 from D3, and 100 from NAA. And you can even do juco if you wanted to. The goal here is to see who you actually get responses from. Because if you send 100 DMS and you get zero responses from D1 FPS schools, you're probably not a D1 FPS guy. Now, as long as you get one from a division level, you're good to go. That means you have a shot to actually get scholarship there.
