A short YouTube advice video by Trenton Luera (former college quarterback) explaining what a Preferred Walk-On (PWO) is in college football: a recruited player who joins the team without a scholarship (not a tryout walk-on). The video defines PWO, clarifies how it differs from walking on via open tryouts, and promises to discuss pros and cons of pursuing the PWO route.

So what is a PWO or a preferred walk on? In this video I'm going to be explaining the way that you can play at a higher division level or school that you more likely want without having to get a scholarship offer. I'm also going to share with you the pros and cons of even doing this in the first place first before we dive in. I'm Trent Lower, I'm a former college quarterback. I played with guys from every single level, have been through the process, and now I help people just like you going through it. So PWO or a preferred walk on is just that it's someone who is preferred to walk on the team. Now what I mean by a walk on is someone who's walking on the team without a scholarship. They're just a normal student having to pay for school, but they're still on the football team. And that preferred part means that they were pretty much recruited to be on the team, not trying out or anything like that. They were recruited basically as a normal scholarship player, but then they didn't get a scholarship and they're having to walk on. So if you're having to show up to the school and just try out for the team and not even sure if you're going to make it, you're not a preferred walk on. You will already know that you have at least a chance at a roster spot in the fall. Now.
