He Got 4 Offers After Zero Interest — Even With No Film & a Late Start

Jet, a high school receiver with a junior-year injury and minimal game film, got four college offers after his father hired Trenton Luera in late October. They made a sub-2-minute highlight, cleaned up his Twitter, and sent 1,500 emails targeting D2 and D3 programs. One offer was worth $17,000 a year; he committed to Southwestern.

All right, so today I want to talk to you about Jet. So Jet and his dad Cliff are two people that came to us back in late October, coming in his senior year as the clock was kind of winding down. And luckily we were able to get him some great results that I show here as this was four offers he ended up taking. One to Southwestern University in his home state of Texas. Um, and one of his offers that he did get, he didn't end up taking this one, but was a $17,000 scholarship for four years. And so this is a really unique case because I want to give you some background on this. Again, he came to us late in the process, again, end of October. Really, they signed on that, really that first second of November was when we first got to really getting the work on this. And as a receiver in modern day and age and recruiting that is significantly late in the process. Yet we were still able to get in this offers and a good amount of time. You'll see December, January, and then committed into February. Obviously before signing day or after signing day. Signing day was on the 5th. But with that being said, I mean, this is the situation beforehand. They weren't doing anything beforehand. They had zero interest, zero offers. He also had a lack of game film due to a run heavy offense and a lack of playing time and then end up getting his injury. He had an injury his junior year prior that caused him to miss the entire season and then was having to catch up this entire senior season. And so they were, they were rightfully frustrated with the entire process. It just seemed like nothing was working out, nothing was going in their direction. They didn't have anything to show for anything. And then ultimately they had a lack of clarity on how to even get recruited. They weren't sending any messages. They weren't doing anything. They were creating because they just weren't sure what to do. And of course it just seems like things weren't. Weren't working out. And maybe you feel the same way. I know I got caught in the same trap of not feeling like it just meant to be. And so luckily they came to me. We hopped on a call, figured out how we might be able to help and luckily, you know, executed on that game plan. And so I'll talk about first of what we did first. I called the foundation. As far as, you know, things that are important in recruiting. And so there's three things, highlights, X's and the messages that you send. I look at these as kind of the first impression of your recruiting process to college coaches because if you don't have these things dialed in and a coach can immediately say, no, I'm not going to root this kid. And a coach makes those decisions in seconds. You need to do everything you can to make sure that those first couple seconds that coach sees you is enough to impress them to continue on and learning more about you. So like I mentioned, Jet was in a unique situation. He didn't have much game film, and so many people think that, hey, just because I have a lack of game film, I'm not going to be able to get recruited. And don't get me wrong, it's. It's definitely tough, it definitely can be challenging. There are certain ways you can go about this. So I think the first thing we did really well was, was the highlight. So he didn't really have a lot of plays. The total highlight tape that we put together was. Was less than two minutes. He really only had one good catch. That I think is, is what really got him recruited as well as just that he had other stuff to show on top of that. So let's talk about first about the length of the highlight video, because a lot of people get this wrong. They think that there is this definite amount of time that a high type needs to be, whether it's a minimum or a maximum, and that's just not true. Your highlight tape could only be like three plays, and that's fine. That's enough. Your highlight tape's job is not to get you an offer. It's to catch the coach's attention enough to make them say, hey, I want to continue recruiting this kid. And so that's what we did. We made sure the first three plays were good enough as well as we gave them a backlog of blocking plays, of stuff that coach want to see from a receiver that may not necessarily have the best stuff, but stuff that they can show that, hey, there's. There's obviously potential here. That's what they could see in him. That's what led him to get the offers that he got. Now, outside of that is the X profile. So his X profile there, there just wasn't enough stuff about him. I was checking out prior to this and everything before they started working with us was just retweets of other, other teams of other players, which is all good and well, like, I don't have anything wrong with that, but your X profile at the end of the day should be there to sell you, not to sell other people. And really for Jed, it was just nothing about him and everything about everybody else. So if A coach came across it, they weren't, weren't any new about him. And so we fixed that by posting stuff about him, posting different highlights about from his season to showcase more stuff. And that way when a coach landed on his page, boom, knew more about him. And obviously once we stacked offers then that just made it easier across there. Lastly, the message is really simple. He wasn't sending any messages. So we had to craft up a whole message system and start sending out. Now once we had these three foundational pieces of his recruiting dialed in, um, then we were able to, to go and ready to launch things out. So the second step was exposure and really this is a two step process because it becomes a lot easier after this. And so this is an email campaign. Two email campaigns that we ran. So the bottom one is more of was just our first intro campaign. We ran this to a small group of, of coaches that we were able to really get dialed in and then once we saw that open rates, the click rates and he was getting responses, now he wasn't getting responses on the emails directly. I didn't want to touch on this as well before I go into the rest of it. He wasn't getting responses from the emails directly. Oftentimes, especially in football where primary method of communication is often X, all of his responses came from X. And so the emails that you send out are often hard to see the return on your time and investment because there's many such cases where you do not get the responses back directly through those emails. You may get a follow, you may get a message through X. And so you should be doing emails in anticipation that the way this is going to be seen as interest is going to be probably on X. And so that was the case with jet. All of his responses came back from X. And so we sent about 1500 emails within a couple of months as well as probably about the same if not more on the XDM side. Um, and so we sent out a more broad campaign that second time around just to kind of expand a little bit once we kind of verified that original target school list. Now with Jet, again with this situation, we weren't going to be targeting many D1 schools that we did target a couple. And he was able to get a few responses here and there. Most of them were D2, D3, many schools. Just with his situation it made sense to do that more. So and of course that was showing the highlight tape that I talked about wasn't anything crazy yet we were still able to get these kind of opens, these clicks, these kind of responses. And then ultimately after that, you know, there was a little bit here and there of relationship building, but with the timeline being so short, it basically transformed into these offers. Now, this is a pretty rare case because most of the time, you know, it does take a couple more months, because, for example, if you're a junior right now, and we're in March, you're probably not going to get your first offer until probably these dates as well, probably December, November. But you're building that relationship over a long time. For Jet, it was immediate. It was, hey, these coaches are needing these players now. These kinds of players now, like a player like Jet, he was there as the. The potential solution. They hopped on a quick call or went to a visit. And really, you can see after a great conversation, he was having phone calls with these. These coaches and they would offer him right, right after that phone call because there was no need to wait for anything else. They. They saw what they wanted. They wanted to offer him right away. And so after that, he was able to get his four offers committed to Southwestern, and. And that was kind of that. So the biggest takeaways, I'll say on this is you don't need a huge amount of film. Even if you're. I mean, the more film, obviously, the better, the more proof that you have. But you don't need this huge amount of film. What you need is, is to make sure that you're directing your attention on the right stuff, making sure your X profile is clean, making sure your messages that you're sending out are the ones that coaches want to see and actually read and open and get interested in you, and that your highlights are stuff that coaches actually want to see. At the end of the day, doesn't matter how many plays you have, if it's none of the plays that coaches want to see, and most importantly, the plays that you have first or what coaches want to see, then you're not going to get recruited because they're not going to be able to see you. What they. They really want, which is, you know, explosive plays, plays that show unique traits, whether it's blocking stuff or unique throws that you can make, you need to grab a coach's attention. And so this is what worked for Jet. It was. It was a blast getting to work with their family. Jet's an awesome kid, and I'm super excited to see him succeed in this next path and glad we're helpful to work with them and make things work. But if you're a family, you know, going through the recruiting process and you're feeling like a lack of clarity, feeling frustrated with the process. It's only understand I went through the process myself and was able to still get over half a million dollars in scholarship money despite being a backup quarterback throughout most of my career. And so we help families do the same. So what you can do is you can click below, book a call with our team. They'll kind of walk you through what we do, how we work, see if it all makes sense, and answering questions that you may have. So hopefully I'll talk to you soon then. And regardless, hope you got something from this peace.
