How Keeghan Got His First Scholarship Offer

Keegan Phil Gordon and his mother Michelle describe how they went from knowing nothing about college football recruiting to landing a scholarship offer from University of Nevada. They found Trenton Luera on Twitter, followed his guidance, and went from zero coach interest to a dozen conversations and seven gameday visits.

All right, so I'm here with the field Gordons, and I'll go ahead and let them explain a little bit more about themselves. So why don't you guys kick it off?
I'm Keegan. Phil Gordon. I'm class of 25. I play O, line, D line, and am trying to play in college as well.
I'm his mother, Michelle, and just trying to help him get to college, get recruited, and get to college.
Awesome.
Well, yeah, I guess with that, you guys mind explaining a little bit more about what your situation was before we first met and started working together, which I think was a little bit over a year now, which is crazy to think about.
Yeah, I think. I think we were one of like your first people. So. No, we had no idea about the whole recruiting thing. We were at a game his sophomore year, his first game of sophomore year, and a mom asked me, oh, so is Keegan trying to get recruited? Is he on Twitter? It's like, twitter what? I had no clue. I barely use Facebook. And. And that's when we figured out what was going on with recruiting. And then from there we just had no idea. We didn't know what to do, who to reach out to, how to reach out to them. The. His high school coach recommended a recruiter that would help us. He did not. It was just a mess. I mean, there was. He did nothing. So again, we were just floundering, trying to figure out what to do. And that's when we stumbled on you and reading all your posts. I think I was up at one in the morning reading, reading your stuff. And that's when I sent you the message that we needed help. We didn't have a clue what we were doing.
Yeah, got it. And then how did you. How do you guys feel like at that time, just before we. We had met and everything before you.
I was ready to pull my hair out.
Yeah. Just pretty lost. I had no idea what to do and what I was doing wrong or whatever. So just very lost.
Yeah, we were just throwing everything we could even think of against the wall and it just. It's like, I don't even know if we're doing this right. Are we pissing off coaches or we just sending the wrong thing or we look in the wrong way? We had. We were just, I mean, 100% clueless. I would troll through Twitter, looking at other kids stuff, seeing what they were posting, so then trying to emulate that. But like I said, once I saw you and saw your stuff and then started reading through it, it's like oh, oh, okay. Okay, that makes sense. And then everything just started making sense, what you were saying. And then we kind of. We. We chilled a little, we calmed down a bit, and figured out it's like, okay, this is. This is okay. We can do this. And then, like I said, I was going through this stuff at, like, one in the morning, I think. I think it was one in the morning when I sent you the message that, you know, send me what you got. Tell me what you got. And that's when we. It just calmed everything down because it all made more sense. It was doable by mere mortals.
So, you know, yeah, definitely. It's. It's a tough process. I. I can definitely get it. So I guess you. You answered this question a little bit. But where did. Where exactly did you. Did you find me and learn more about me?
Twitter. Just saw some posts on Twitter, both looked and read.
Well, Shannon found him. Shannon found him. A kid who was a year ahead of him. His mom's like, hey, I saw this guy on Twitter, this Trenton guy. It's like, okay, Trenton. Like, give me more. I'm not searching, you know, Twitter for Trenton. And she remembered. She's like, trenton, Lora. So I'm searching. That's how we found you. Shannon found you first and said that I should take a listen to you. And then that's when I went trolling for you.
Awesome. Awesome. Yeah, I remember you first reaching out and kind of having our conversations over dm, and then finally we got to meet and got to start working with each other from there. But what were your thoughts? Going through the process with me and.
Working with me, it was a lot easier. Like, if I had questions, I always knew where to go to find the answers, just. And, like, weird stuff that would happen. Like, the stuff with Wyoming and everything, it was just. It was easy to find the answers to the weird stuff that was happening throughout the process.
Yeah, there's a lot of weird stuff going on through the process. So.
Yeah, but after working with you, it's like we're actually able to process that better as well because of everything we did with you in the very beginning. Because I don't think we've ever felt as just crazy and just discombobulated as when we first met you, just trying to figure all that out and then how you just had it just so simply laid out for us and we could focus in on what we needed to do in the steps we needed to do. And that worked well for my brain. So, yeah, everything that got thrown at us after that made it easier to deal with that just with how you already laid everything else out. And I know once we started working with you again, like I said, we. We calmed down. We were able to be a lot calmer about things. And anytime I would tell him one thing, he's like, I don't think that's how it should be. And I'd be saying this, it's like, fine, then go ask Trenton. He would ask Trenton and be like, see? Told you. So that made it easier.
Yeah, definitely. Well, yeah, I'm glad that I was able to give that clarity and make things a little bit easier because, yeah, it's. It's so easy with recruiting to second guess yourself and guess where exactly you should be putting your energy and your time, and you're like, this thing sounds good. This thing sounds good. But, like, how do we even know if either of those work? And so it's. It's. It's hard to figure out exactly which direction you should be going because there's so many that you could be doing at the same time.
What were.
What were some of your doubts and fears about joining your first scholarship and working with me?
If it was really gonna help? I guess. I guess with the experience already with the recruiter, it was hesitant about jumping into another recruiting thing. So, I don't know, just doubtful that it would actually help, I guess.
I. I didn't feel that way. No. From after reading your Twitter posts and then just having the conversation with you. So once. Once we did that, I immediately felt more comfortable. I immediately. Again, I keep using the word calm. I immediately felt calmer about all of it. A little more ease from the start, just because what you're saying made sense. It. It all made sense. It was so simple and just, you know, common sense that it wouldn't occur to you if you didn't know. So, yeah, I felt comfortable from the start, and I liked being able to ask you questions and get immediate answers and not get an answer. A week, two weeks from now, I could immediately get the answers to these questions. So I was calm from the start.
Got it. I'm curious what, Keegan, you said, like, you were a little nervous, but, like, what. What made you end up still. Still being like, okay, I think this is. This is worth it.
Just the information we had already gotten from you that had proven to work, so it was easier to go into that since we already had a basis of stuff that worked with you. So I was still a little worried, but there was more trust there.
Definitely. Yeah.
Than I've experienced before. So.
Yeah, and I get that. I think sadly that's a common situation where just bridges have been burnt in the past and I totally get that. So appreciate you. You trusting me with this, both of you. So I guess going to the current situation where. Where are you guys at right now? What's. What's going on with the process right now?
I'm just trying to get the last few offers before hopefully committing here soon. Hopefully get University of Nevada. That's the main one I want. Had a phone call with them earlier telling me about how their RO cut spots are being cut. So just trying to get the. The tail end of everything for the end of season. So.
Awesome. Awesome.
I'm still doing the stuff that we've been doing since the beginning. It's like I'm not taking anything for granted that because I've helped him a lot with this with everything he had going on. So I, I did help him a lot with this. But yeah, I'm still sending out the messages and everything because I'm not. Until something's signed, we are not done. But. And it seems like, you know, every time we turn around there's like a neat new rule from the NCAA that makes it super fun. The cutting of the roster spots has been awesome. That's great. That's so great. Killing the pwos and. But you know, you just keep dealing with it and it's like fine, you know, if it's not working there, then we're gonna go to this level. We're just gonna keep plugging away. Plugging away. I know after being with you for so long, the one thing I was telling him, I'm like, no matter what, you're gonna play college ball. You're playing college ball no matter what. We don't have a clue where, but you're gonna play.
So.
And that was I think absolute. I'm 100 certain, you know, after doing everything with you that, that, that you'll play. But yeah, just trying to get them locked in. We've got a ton of game day visits this month and next month we've got like seven game day visits coming up. So, you know, and the coaches are cool. The ones we're going to see, they're cool. They're sending him like game day, you know, good luck DMS and all that. And so that's cool.
Awesome. Awesome. I guess from a. From like a more concrete like numbers wise results like what. What have you guys. Or would you guys say you. You went from before to after as far as like the amount of interest that you guys have gotten, the conversations as well as the offer. I was gonna say offers, but just the offer right now.
Yeah, zero to 100, maybe. I had a couple conversations with coaches. None that really had anything to them. Yeah. So zero.
Yeah.
There's pretty much nothing. When I started with you, maybe one or two coaches I was talking to, and then after. Yeah. Now I'm talking to. Oh, dozen plus.
Yeah. And, I mean, they'll call him on his phone. I didn't know coaches did that. They're calling up, hey, Keegan, what's up? Like, what? So, no, it was. I mean, zero in the beginning. Zero. There may have been a couple that you'd get those weird, random, you know, follows on Twitter and. But half of them, you're like, is this a scam? Is this real? What is this? But yeah, after working with you, I mean, there is just a list on his dm, the coaches that are still talking with him, I wish they would go ahead and get the offers in. What could be done? But, you know, they're still talking to them.
Awesome. And then you just have the. The one offer right now, or did you. Did you pick up another one since then, or the one.
Just the one.
Got it. Cool. Well, that's. That's awesome. What are you. What are you able to do now that you couldn't really do before?
I guess just talk to coaches. I was always worried about what to say and stuff like that, and just there's been multiple times where I've asked you questions, so now I'm able to pretty much do it on my. On my own where I can just. I don't know. They send me some weird side quest about going here, here and here, and I know how to respond, so it's made it a lot easier.
Definitely, definitely getting offered PWO spots as your. You're a junior and weird stuff like that.
Yeah, right. He moved to Houston and now it's nothing.
Crickets.
Yeah.
Cool. Well, yeah, just to. To wrap it up. I mean, what would you. What would you both say to someone who is. Is watching this right now and is unsure about taking the next step in the recruiting process?
If you want to play, it's worth it. If you want to play at the next level, the information doesn't hurt at all. It's not going to hurt you. It's only helped me. So.
Yeah. If any parents are questioning whether or not 100%. Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it. I have given your name to so many parents on his team. Fact. What was it? A week ago? I had a meeting. Two other moms are like, can you come out with us? And sat there and just grilled me. And it's like, look at Trenton. Look at Trenton. Look at Trenton. So, yeah, 100% you. You made it manageable. You made it. I mean, because there were times I was probably putting more in on that, on the recruiting than my job. And, yeah, you made it manageable. And now, like, even this far down the road and we've had to switch gears because of the different Rul coming in, that is more than likely going to affect him, it's like. Yep. It's easy to. With everything from you, it's easy to pivot and go this path because that's what we need to do now. Yeah. No, 100%, it. It was hands down worth everything, all the time. Effort, money, everything. It was worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I'm glad to hear that.
That's working with you, not the other. Just. I would not do that again.
Awesome. Well, I. I appreciate you both sharing all of this. If anyone's out there watching this, whether you're a parent or athlete and want to work with me, then the best next step is to book a call with me so we can talk one on one, see if it makes sense. So you can go to call.yourfirstscholarship.com we'll see if it makes sense. And if it doesn't, no worries. Still point you in the best direction. So with that, appreciate you guys hopping on, and I'll see you soon.
Thank you.
