HOW TO BECOME THE MAN YOU ARE MEANT TO BE

Tyson Smith argues self-improvement never ends, so focus on leading indicators you control daily rather than outcomes. Visualize your ideal self, map their routines, cut habits that hold you back. Track concrete actions like five offers a day or 10,000 steps instead of waiting for results.

What's up guys, uh, today we have a super casual video for you today. As you can see, we're just filming off the phone, ripping, uh, from the heart right now. I'm sitting down and it's the beginning of the new year and I've been thinking about my New Year's resolutions and the things that I need to become and add to my life and take away from my life in order to get me closer to becoming the highest ideal version of Tyson that exists. And through that, I just got thinking about some stuff that I really wanted to share with you, starting with a story that I'm sure most of you guys have heard about before, but it's the story of Sisyphus, who was— it's a Greek method, uh, Greek legend. But apparently this guy Sisyphus was the king of Corinth, but he tricked the gods twice out of death, and for that Zeus sentenced him to an eternal punishment, having to roll a rock up and down a hill for all of eternity. Um, and like every single time he would get closer, um, with the rock, it just rolled back down and he had to start over back from zero. And so basically the The point of this story is to like talk about, you know, mortality and these other things. But through this story, it has led to the development of the word sisyphean, which is a task that can never be completed. Just how Sisyphus will never be able to roll the rock over the hill and be done rolling the rock. He's just doing that for all of eternity. And self-development is a sisyphean task because it never ends. You never are going to reach this point where you're like, yep, I'm exactly the guy I want to be. I'm done. I don't— like, nobody has ever done that. It'll never happen. And that's kind of the beauty of it, is that it does never change. And so I think when you are setting goals, it's important to realize the finiteness of it, is that your goals are going to change. You are going to get new ones. And so, um, when it comes down to my goal setting, it's all based around the central question of who is the man that I want to become? What is the highest ideal version of me? And I think the most important part to, to first look at when asking yourself that question is what does What does that person look like? When you're trying to find something, the first thing you want to do is discover what does it look like, right? Like if I, you know, ask you, hey, can you go find my friend in this crowd of people? Your first question would be like, well, what does he look like? What's he wearing, right? So you need to clearly define what your highest ideal version of yourself looks like. And I think it's most important to figure this out in the most minute, like get really down and gritty, and you need to be able to visualize every single part of it. So I'm talking like, what kind of clothes do they wear? What does the haircut look like? Are they strong? Are they thin? Are they, you know, everything you can possibly think of. Because if you're chasing something, you want to find something, you want to become something, we need to know exactly what it is, what it looks like, to help us get there. Um, the next thing you need to look at— oh, and in relation to what this looks like, you know, what this person looks like, um, in setting my New Year's goals, right? These are very important to me because like I don't look exactly the way that the highest version of myself does, right? I don't have the exact physique, um, uh, that I want to. And so that's something I'm constantly chasing. And we all know, like, there's never been anybody who's gotten their dream physique. Like, even Chris Bumstead feels like he can get better— Mr. Olympian guy for the past 4 or 5 years or whatever it is. So that's constantly somewhere chasing. So that'll always be on the docket, right? It's becoming more fit, um, building your body in the way you want it to, whatever it may be. And then there are other parts of that as well. Like, so for me, um, I've been able to take care of a lot of things. Like, you know, I wanted better teeth. I've, you know, there's some things I've done in the past. But becoming the, uh, your avatar and shaping yourself to be exactly the way you want to look, I think, is a very important part of setting goals for yourself and becoming the most ideal version. Following that is going to be, uh, you know, what does the most ideal version of yourself do? And this is— I like to think of it from a full day routine, and I also like to look at it like from like a weekly standpoint as well, of being like, you know, if I'm in a picture and if it was like if money was no object, what would you do every single day? What time would you be waking up? What's the first thing you would do in the morning? What does your morning routine look like? Do you even have a morning routine? Is that something that you see in the ideal version of yourself? You know, what are you— what are some things you do every day? And obviously, the most ideal version of myself is very fit, so there's going to be some kind of physical activity there. Um, there's going to be some things to do with like nutrition and cooking or getting food somehow or another. But just really planning out is, what does this person do every single day? How, how much time do they spend working on their relationships, right? Talking with family, your significant other, your friends, right? Your network, reaching out to people that you do business with or want to do business with and building relationships with other people to get you to the next level, right? How much time does this person spend doing these things every single day and what does that look like? And I think that's really important too, just to break it down in the same way I said earlier about building your avatar and what does that person look like is what does this person do every single day? Right? How do they spend their evenings? Right? Are they sitting on the couch playing Fortnite or are they spending time with family? Are they still working? Right? Do the most ideal version of yourself work 12 hours a day? I know for me personally, they don't. Like, I don't want to work 12 hours a day. I never wanted to. For me, I personally want to spend, you know, somewhere around the 4-hour mark of deep focus work, getting a ton done rather than spending all day working because I have other things that I like to do and enjoy. Right? So I think it's really important to map out like, what does the ideal day look like? Like, how often does this person travel, go on vacations, and how are they able to do that? And all these different things. And again, while it is important to get this down to the most granular way you possibly can, you also need to realize that this isn't permanent and that these things are gonna change. And there are gonna be answers that you don't know the answer to, right? And that's fine because that's all part of the process. But more importantly, after deciding, you know, what does this person look like, what do they do, I think more importantly than both of those is realizing what does this person not do. When it comes to self-development, for me personally, I've noticed I've made the biggest changes in my life not by adding things, but by subtracting them. You know, whether that's taking away bad habits, taking away— taking yourself out of environments that don't serve you, taking yourself out of relationships that don't serve you, things of that nature are what are going to propel you further faster than adding, in my opinion, especially in the beginning. So I think it's really important to look back at your previous year and say, hey, what were the things that stopped me from achieving my goals of last year, or stopped me from becoming the person I wanted to be? And you need to identify them, and you need to be really real with yourself. And this is a very tough thing to do, you know, looking, looking, you know, back at the past and, and having to be honest with yourself about certain decisions you've made, or or relationships you've been in, or friendships you have, or environments that you consistently find yourself in that do not serve you, and being real about how am I going to get rid of that is a very difficult thing. However, it's better to rip that Band-Aid off than live your whole life doing these things that are stopping you from becoming the person you want to be, and then all of a sudden dying and having the regret that you never got rid of that, right? So figuring out what you need to get rid of, I believe, of the 3 things, the most important that you can possibly do. The last thing I really wanted to touch on, on this video of becoming the highest version of yourself is when you are setting goals, I think it's very important to focus on the leading indicators rather than the lagging indicators. And what I mean by that is this is kind of terms that I most commonly hear talked about in business of you have things that are like lagging indicators, like profit and revenue, and you have leading indicators, which are things that get you to the profit and the revenue, you know, things like you know, leads coming in and offers being made or things of that nature. So the leading indicators are what cause the lagging indicators. And so when I'm setting goals, I always want to focus on the leading indicators. So rather than setting a goal of I want to make $5 million this year, I'm saying what is the thing I can do that's going to get me to the $5 million? And my philosophy behind this is lagging indicators are sort of outside of your control whereas leading indicators are inside your control. And what I mean by that is, so for instance, if my goal is I want to make $5 million this year, maybe one thing that'll be a part of that is I need to make 5 offers every single day. If every single day I talk to sellers of real estate and I make 5 offers, I know that that's going to translate into a decent chunk of revenue for me at the end of the year. Because if I make 5 offers every single day, that's going to turn into wholesale deals. Those wholesale deals are going to turn into, you know, signed contracts, that turns into money in my pocket. Now, that might not be the only thing, the only goal I have to focus on if I want to get to my goal of $5 mil, but that could be part of it. But the whole point is, is we're focusing on the thing that's 100% in my control, which is whether or not I make 5 offers a day, and not focused on the end result, which is the thing we want of getting $5 mil, but that's outside of our control, right? So for instance, if your goal is to lose weight, rather than saying, hey, my goal is I'm gonna lose 25 pounds, I would rather your goal be, hey, every single day, um, I'm gonna take 10,000 steps a day, right? Because that's 100% in your control, is whether or not you take 10,000 steps a day. And if you take 10,000 steps a day, you're gonna lose weight, right? Because for more people than not, that's way more steps than you normally take. That's going to cause your resting, you know, your average metabolic rate, how many calories you burn in a day, to go way up, and that's going to cause you to lose weight, right? But it's focusing on the leading indicator rather than the lagging indicator. And when we're able to focus on things that are 100% in our control, then it's going to allow— oh, and also the point is of being a daily action rather than one big year, because the goal of, hey, I'm gonna make $5 million can be really scary. And that's like, you know, it's like, okay, that's a big thing. Like, how am I going to do that? How do I break that down? Where, you know, people say like the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Where if you break it down into something like, I'm gonna make 5 offers a day, that's something you can started on and you can start to see the progress right away. And it doesn't feel like this big thing because it's not, I've got to make $5 million right now. It's I just have to make 5 offers today. I just need to figure out a way to do that and I need to figure out a way to stay consistent with that every single day this year. So guys, if you guys want to have the greatest 2024 that you possibly can, I recommend you to do these things. Take a second to sit down, actually write this down of, hey, who is this guy that I want to become? Or who is this woman that I want to become? Right. What do they look like? What are the things that they spend their time doing? Who do they spend time around? When they're around these people, what are they like? Are they constantly on their phone? Are they constantly being a dick and, and saying that they, you know, arguing with people? Or are they engaged in Socratic conversation and trying to understand other points of view, or whatever it may be? And, and think about what does this person not ever do. I know it's really hard. It's something I've had to do many times, is to look in this mirror of truth and decide, hey, what are some bad habits that I have But when I was able to do that and when I was able to remove some things, I'm telling you, I saw myself go forward so much faster than anything else. And then when you're thinking about these things, please write them down. Um, that's the first step in actualizing any kind of thing, right? There's power in writing things down. Put it in a paper. And one thing I will warn you of is while it is important maybe to talk to other people and to network, but I do not recommend sharing your goals with too many people. When you start talking about your goals, you get some of the same dopamine you'd get from actually achieving the goal, and then that could stop you from actually getting there, right? So write them down, keep that between you and yourself until you actually do knock it out of the park, and then you can celebrate and you can talk with your loved ones and the people you want to about, hey, here's what I set out to do and look, I did it. And then lastly, just remember that there is no winning or losing in this game. Um, it never ends. This is something that you're going to be doing for the rest of your life, so you want to find enjoyment in this, right? You don't need to think of it as a punishment or something you're doing or you're constricting yourself. You are growing yourself when you're working on things like that, and it's something that— it's, it's pretty awesome that we get to spend our entire lives doing this, becoming the best version of ourselves, and we're just very lucky, uh, to have the opportunity. 2024 is going to crush. I'm excited for it. I love the beginning of the new year to sit down and think about what are the things that I want to get after I'm really excited for what this year is going to come. I think that if you take this advice to heart, it's going to be a really good year for you too. So I appreciate you guys for watching. If you guys haven't already, please subscribe to the channel. I'm gonna give you a hint that one of my goals is that I'm going to post one long-form video a week, so at least one video on YouTube a week. So there should be at least 52 new videos on this channel, uh, this year. It'll probably be more than that, but that's my, you know, leading indicator that will lead to the lagging indicator, the actual goal that I want. Subscribe to the channel, give this video a like, go ahead and comment below, um, what might have helped you during this, or if you have something else you'd like me to talk about that will be able to give you the help to get to places you want to go, comment below and maybe we'll make a video about it.
