Isaac was blinded so God wouldn't have to speak slander about Esau, the sages say. The lesson: never gossip or slander anyone, no matter how wicked they are. Guard your speech.
This week we read that Isaac becomes blind. Why would the Creator blind a holy, blessed patriarch like Isaac? Our sages explain that the Creator blinded Isaac so Isaac will bless Jacob instead of Esau. But why blind Isaac for that? The Creator could have just told Isaac that Esau is evil, therefore Isaac needs to be blessed instead, despite Esau being the firstborn. The answer is that the Creator did not want to speak slander on Esau. The Creator blinded Isaac to demonstrate the importance of not speaking evil gossip on anyone, not even on the wicked person like Esau. Even more so, we should never speak evil gossip about any person whatsoever.
