How to reach the ultimate spiritual elevation.

In this YouTube lecture, Uzi Moses PhD interprets the "Lev" (Heart) chapter of the Alter Rebbe’s Tanya, presenting a roadmap for spiritual elevation. He explains that each person possesses a Godly spark—a fragment of the Divine—that is exiled within the physical body and the animal soul. The primary mission is to redeem this spark, making it the dominant force in one’s life. Redemption is achieved through contemplation, good deeds, and especially the mitzvah of Ahavat Yisrael (love of one’s fellow). Moses links the Hebrew word for love ("ahavah") to the gematria value 13, showing that loving oneself (13) plus loving one’s neighbor (13) yields 26, the numerical value of the Divine Name (Yud‑Hei‑Vav‑Hei), thereby creating a spiritual conduit. He outlines a hierarchical approach to love—starting with self‑care, then family, friends, community, city, state, nation, and finally the world—emphasizing that true love must be unconditional and not contingent on personal benefit. He uses analogies such as a prince released from prison and diamonds of equal clarity to illustrate the equality of all souls and the joy that arises when the Godly soul returns home. The lecture extends these principles to modern contexts, arguing that businesses succeed when they prioritize community welfare over profit, reflecting the same spiritual ethic. Ultimately, Moses asserts that elevating the soul above the body and fostering unity among souls leads to collective blessings and global redemption.
Chapters
Hello everyone. Thank you for joining me again on our continuation of learning the mindset of the Alter Rebbe, the Tanya, which is really, really mind-blowing at some points. Sometimes, you know, there's a lot of questions that are arising from this learning. But the main thing is that we are on a mission to make our Godly Soul, make our Godly Spark, that Divine Spark that is an actual part of the Creator, the most dominant part of our life, and release it from the that imprisonment of the physical body and the animal soul. And we are all really, really merited to have the Book of the Tanya, which actually gives us the tool and the know-how, how to get it done. So, today's chapter is chapter Lev, which means heart, which is also the heart of the book of the Tanya. It really talks about something that is very, very important and crucial for us to understand, to know, and to implement before we can really do anything else. In the last chapter, the Alter Rebbe explains that after we are reaching a point of bitterness and a broken heart, By really contemplating and like thinking about our spiritual state that we understand that we, that, that we need to kind of understand where we stand spiritually. We have to, we have to reach true happiness by this contemplation, by looking at really understand where we are. As far as our body and our animal soul, and to see how far we are from our Godly soul, or from the Creator, and to reach the true happiness by understanding that there is a Godly spark in us, that it's an actual God, it's an actual part of Godliness, it's an It's literally, and because that spark is in exile because of the body and the animal soul, we have to have a lot of mercy on it, and we have to work hard to redeem that Godly spark that we have, and to bring it back to its root, which means being connected to godliness, being connected to the Creator. And we only, we can only do that by really performing numbers of good deeds and really connecting to spirituality and to the light of the Creator. And just by doing that, you know, coming back home, it's like really brings a tremendous, tremendous happiness. To the soul, and it's like, like the same happiness that it was described in the previous chapters, in the previous chapter, like the son of the king getting released from prison and coming back to his father's house. And even though the body stays in a lower state, we have to understand that the soul should be more precious to us than our body. And we should not let sadness or any type of negative emotion interfere with this happiness. With this happiness of bringing back our Godly Soul into being the dominant part of our life. And we should understand that We should really, when we, when we do this contemplation, when we really starting to understand our place, we have to really understand that true happiness, really, really, really true happiness, is a happiness that comes from the Soul returning back home. Our Godly spark returning back home. It's this, it's the happiness of the Soul. And it should not be the happiness of the body. We should not connect to this kind of happiness, because this kind of happiness eventually brings to tremendous void and sadness. And he talks about like, how can that be done? Right? So we understand that, you know, in order for us to redeem our godly soul from exile, we have to, you know, perform good deeds. We have to do something. And he's giving us the tools here. For the most important thing we need to do in order to do that. And that is love their, their neighbor. Love their neighbor. In Hebrew, it's "be'afteh le'achak amocha," which means love your neighbor, love your friend, Which means everybody that it's not you, as much as you love yourself. And there is a real, really amazing thing about this, because the word love in Hebrew has a numerical value of the number 13. So, for order for you to be able to connect to bring back that Godly spark, which is the letters Yud, Kevav, Kevav, which is a numerical value 26, which is the upper name of Hashem, you need an additional love. So if love equals 13, you need an additional love. So you have to love yourself, and then you have to love your neighbor or your friend as much as you love yourself, and then Doing this simple math, 13 plus 13 creates the number 26, and that's the number that literally brings back the ultimate connection to the Creator. And we have to start with little things, you know, with good deeds, you know, and we have to love, you know, everybody, as much as we love ourselves. And also we have to look at our body and look at our, in our Godly Soul and to be like, you know, enough with that. Look at it as something like a fowl, like something that it's, it's lower. And you should not love your body more then you love your fellow man, your fellow people, your community, humanity, so to say. You know, it starts when we talk about loving humanity, it starts with your family inside your home, and start— and then goes to your friends, and then goes to your community, and then goes to your city, and then goes to your state, and then goes to your country, and then goes to your— the rest of the world. So, it has to be done in those levels, because you can't be, you know, thinking about people that are far from you and not be, you know, nice and kind and compassionate towards the people that you actually live with in your home, or people in your community. You know, people in your community should have better priority than people that lives, let's just say, in China. You know, even though the people in China are very important, everybody is important. And we should love everyone, but it has to be done in that certain order to make sense. So he's saying that again, there is no room for us to love ourselves more than we love humanity, because we have to be, because like we can't think, oh, you know, my soul is higher than their soul, I have a higher level than them, so I should love myself more. Because nobody really knows the level of their soul. That's what he is trying to make us understand. Why should we love everybody as much as we love ourselves? Because on the soul level, we're all the same. On the soul levels, You know, if somebody that thinks that their soul is higher or more important than the soul of other people cannot really know that. Maybe it's the opposite. Maybe it's the opposite. Maybe he's just being arrogant, just thinking, oh, you know, my soul is better or I'm on a higher level. But on the soul level, you know, maybe in the physical world there is hierarchy and there is levels. Their spiritual levels. But when you really look at the pure, pure soul that every human being has in them, some people have the more dominance of the godly soul on their life. Some people have the opposite. Some people don't even give their godly soul a chance. And this is why we're doing all these videos to hopefully to make people kind of understand that they have something inside of them that it's godly and they have to really work on bringing that out of exile. You know, releasing that thing from jail. Just like, you know, that this parable about the king's son, son of the king, the prince. So again, it's very, very, very important for us to understand that all Souls are equal. All Souls are equal and they are on the same level. Because they are all a pure state. It's just like taking a diamond and comparing it to the same exact diamond, which has the same color and the same clarity. So, if you have two diamonds that have the same color and same clarity, There is no one that's better than the other, they are all the same. And this is what the souls are. The souls are like a pure diamond, that it's the same color and clarity to all of us. We all have the same type of diamond, and that's also a parable to our Godly Soul. And even though we are very alike, But we also difference. There is a difference between each and every one of us. And there is a difference in the mission, in the purpose, in the talents, in the skills that each and every person have. But just like saying, just like many brothers have from one family that comes from one father, this is the same thing with the souls. There is one father and we all belong to that father and we have one father and we have one root. And this is how we can explain the idea that we have to love our fellow man just the way we love ourselves. Because loving ourselves is very natural. It's very natural. Of course we love ourselves. You know, we want to eat. We want to, you know, dress nice. We want to, you know, some people they care about their health. They go out running. They go out, you know, they take care of their body. They take care of their health. You have to love yourself. You have to. I mean, I mean, it's very natural. It's very natural and it's a part of loving, you know, anybody else, because if you don't love yourself, it's very hard to show love to anybody. So you have to first love yourself. And that's a very natural thing, it's a very natural thing. But loving your fellow man, it's not. This is something that it's not natural, it doesn't come naturally. And and something that comes naturally, that it's from the essence of who we are, it's always easier. And something that it's not, it's harder. So, how can we love our fellow man? How can we love anybody that's not us, the same way we love ourselves? But we have to understand that from the Soul level, We all come from one root, and as far as the soul goes, the soul have— the soul itself loves all the other souls very naturally, just like brothers have natural love towards each other, you know. But, but that's from the Soul level. But that's from the Soul level, because the Souls are all united, they're all one. But the bodies are separated. So, so when there is separation, what happen? Each body thinks that they are the most important, and, and, and, and it's, it's almost impossible to have true love and unity between all bodies. Because, and then he continues, because as far as the soul goes, loving everybody and everything and every human being and every person that you see is very natural. It's very natural. Obviously, like I said, you have to love, you know, in a certain way. Which means, you know, your family first, friends, community, city, country, state, and state and country, and then the rest of the world. But again, because, you know, so for the soul to love, It's natural, that's how the soul is. But the body is harder. So, the only love that you have between bodies is love that is dependent on something. There is an interest. Like, I love this because of this. I love you because you're giving me some kind of a pleasure or some kind of a benefit or some kind of a thing. And makes me love you. But we also understand that love, that it's dependent on something. That let's just say I love my friend because, you know, he gives me inspiration and he, you know, helps me with stuff that I need and he's there for me and I love him for that. But then if, let's just say, he stopped doing that for whatever reason, then I'm not gonna love him anymore. Because I loved him for that reason. The love wasn't true love. It wasn't a love on the soul level. And this is what he's talking about. He's talking about when love depends on something, if that thing gets cancelled, the love gets cancelled. But as far as the soul goes, it doesn't work that way. The Soul is something, the Soul loves everyone on the Soul level, always. Always, just like you love your brothers, just like you love your family, and it's something natural, and it comes naturally to you, it's from the essence of who you are, then that could never be broken. And then he explains, Even a bigger thing here. He's saying that happiness, when we reach happiness, true happiness, it makes this deed, this good deed to love your fellow man easier. Because what's happened is that when you reach true happiness, and he explains how do we reach true happiness, by releasing our godly soul from exile and bringing it back to be the dominant part of our life. And how we do that? Through contemplation, you know, thinking about how, you know, far we are and having this sadness that comes from the spiritual side, okay, of, you know, of us wanting to achieve more on a spiritual level. And then once we— once the sadness comes from the right place, when it's directed correctly, it brings tremendous happiness, and that happiness helps us love Much more, much more, because this just turns it to almost natural, the same way that we love our brothers. So, he says that, you know, the Torah, the whole Torah, it really talks about the soul, the soul only. Yeah, there is many stories and there is many things, but it's really all about the soul. And when we understand that, it will bring us to the greatest mitzvah, obviously the mitzvah of Ahavat Yisrael, which is loving your fellow man, your fellow Yid, your fellow neighbor, love thy neighbor. Yisrael is also a code name that says direct El, which means direct yourself to God. So when there is a person that is directing his energy, his mind, to God and he wants to connect with the Creator, he's considered Israel, so to say. And then he says the whole thing, the whole thing that he says that loving your fellow man, Loving your humanity, loving everything that it's not you, that is the foundation and the root for all good deeds, for all good deeds between human beings, one to each other. And this is why you should also be very careful you know, when it comes to doing deeds between you and the place. Because, for example, when you love yourself, then you do things for yourself. You meditate, you pray, you do all the things to elevate yourself because you care about yourself. But when you do that, that brings you to also love your fellow man. And we should be careful with that. We should not cancel those, this for that. Because to really understand that the foundation and the root of everything is loving your fellow man, like everything that you do with your job, you should never do it for you, for you only. You know, this is why now, you know, they talk about Dr. Yehiel Harari in one of his lectures, he was talking about the new companies, the new societies that that in the olden days, when you had a company, a business, the business' main goal was to sell, was to make money. And they didn't really care if that, whatever they sell, is good for the community or not good for the community. But nowadays, in the new world, in the new society, the first and foremost and the most important thing is community. So every business that operates and sells a product, They have to really do that out of caring for the community. And when they do that through caring for the community, then the feedback they're going to get from the community will definitely eventually bring them success because they become an altruistic company, which means a company that does not want— that they're not there just for the money. They're there to do good in the world. And now people can see this, they can sense it. They know, you know, this thing is not just for this company to make another few bucks, okay? But this company really cares. And we see today that companies that don't follow this, this new way of business, they don't really survive because you have to care. You have to care about your fellow your fellow man, your humanity, the community that you're serving. You have to really have a sense of caring about them. And he says it's very, very important. It's very important because at the end of the day, you know, there is companies that they don't, you know, a year goes by and some of them are 100 years old companies and all the people that started those companies, they're already, there's already a new generation. So it's really not about the people. It's not about whoever started the company or the CEO or the founders. It's really not about them. It's about what they do for the community and what they bring and the value that they create for the community. And that's what counts. And that's something that could live, that can last 100 years, 150 years, and even more. Because as long as there is care and value that's being given, then it will continue. It will continue forever. And this is the thing that now it talks about that really, really the foundation and the root of the whole Torah, the whole New Testament, Old Testament, anything that has to do with spirituality, with getting closer to the Creator, is to elevate the soul above the body. Which means, like it says that the Alter Rebbe will explain here, that he says that this is the whole Torah, this is everything, this is the foundation and the root of everything, to elevate the soul over the body. And it comes from down to up, which means, which means that we have to become one. We have to become one, because when there is unity in the souls down here, then Then there is really, there is blessings. And when there is, God forbid, separation, the light of the Creator, our Godly soul, cannot be there. It cannot be there because when there is something that it's like a defective, like when somebody does not see the unity in the world, does not understand the unity in the world, and does not want to be become a part of it. You know, a lot of people are denying the idea of the unity of the world, the oneness. Okay, I mean, how can you— I mean, I, you know, everybody can believe whatever they want. There is no, you know, nobody's forcing anybody to believe anything. But today we understand that everybody come together. It has nothing to do with religion anymore. It's common sense. Common sense. We should all, we are humans, we should all work together to make this world better, to correct this world, and to elevate each other. And he says that the light of the Creator cannot reside at a place where people don't get it, when there is separation, and there is no real unity. And this is why it's part of the praying that we are saying, is that we want to be blessed as one. You know, we say, bless us, God, bless us as one. Why do we want God to bless us as one? Because we know if we're going to ask a separate blessing for ourselves, it probably won't happen. But if we ask it as one, we're all blessed as one, and that for sure will happen. Because you see, the idea and the good deed about loving your fellow man, or love their neighbor, it's based on connecting all the soul together. And this is why it's something that it's committing to each and every person in the world. Because each and every human being have a soul, And all those souls have to eventually come together in unity and be one and help elevate the world and help elevate themselves. Just like when we do the work and contemplate and release our Godly soul from imprisonment, from exile, We, we reach tremendous happiness. Tremendous happiness. Imagine when that's going to happen on a global scale. That will for sure bring the redemption. So that's it for today. Thank you so much for listening.
