Manis Friedman argues that proportional response in conflict is childish and leads to stalemate. To win a war, he says, you must do more than your enemy, not mirror their actions with equal casualties.

Oh, that sounds like a lot. How do you measure a lot? Well, they only killed 2,000 and you've killed 20,000. It's not proportionate. That is the most ridiculous argument. First of all, the only way to win is by doing more than the enemy. If you do exactly what the enemy does, the war will never end. There'll be no winner. There'll be no loser. You kill one, I kill one. You kill two, I kill two. What is this? It is such a childish, immature attitude. You kidnap one, I kidnap one. You rape one, I rape one. It is so embarrassing.
