Thank you, sir. I now request our esteemed chief guest for the day, Vishal Anand A G sir, to address the inaugural ceremony.
So good morning, one and all, and thanks for the brief and nice introduction. And before I start, I just want to ensure that we are in the middle of a pandemic and hope everyone is safe and their families are safe. So that's at most and the most important thing right now. So having said that, we'll get to the business of the day. Sir, my slides visible?
Yes, sir.
Yes, sir.
Okay, so, so good morning once again to everyone. Uh, we are here today to inaugurate the, uh, student branch chapter of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, uh, in New Horizon College of Engineering. So, uh, first of all, I would like to thank the management of New Horizon College of Engineering for having taken up this initiative. and inaugurating this student branch chapter. I also like to thank the Department of Electrical Engineering and for going ahead and doing all the groundwork for to make this happen. And also the IEEE branch, student branch of New Horizon College of Engineering, because without their support, I don't think this would have been possible. I would also like to thank the IEEE Parent Society in Bangalore, of which we are all a part. And we would like to work furthermore with the Power Electronics Student Branch chapters that have been opened in colleges in and around Bangalore. I think Amrita has the first branch and now there's a second branch followed by, uh, UBCE on Thursday. So the Power Electronics Society is one of the fastest growing technical societies, uh, of IEEE, and PELS has facilitated and guided the development and innovation in power electronics technology. So these are the main charters of power electronics, PELS Society, and as a whole. And PELS is again dedicated to upholding the vital scientific and educational aspects of power electronics and its applications. And it's also, uh, significant in keeping its members around the globe up to date on state-of-the-art technological developments and advances in power electronics research. So these are a few, uh, points about the Power Electronics Society. Like to now go on to the mission statement of PELS. So the objective of the PELS shall be scientific, literary, and educational character. The society shall advance the theory and practice of electrical and electronics engineering and of all allied arts and sciences, and it shall promote a high level of technical excellence among its members. PELS shall aid in promoting close cooperation and exchange of technical information among its members and affiliates, and to this end shall hold meetings for the presentation of papers and their discussion. Sponsor periodicals and special publications, and through its committee shall study and provide the needs of its members and affiliates. So this mission statement is on the PELS website. You can go ahead and check it out. And we being members of the PELS Bangalore chapter, we look forward to working closely with the student branch chapters in Bangalore and to take this mission forward in various programs that we are going to conduct today. as of today and going forward also. And the fields of interest of the PELS Society are basically in computer and telecommunications equipment, data centers, consumer electronic products, automobiles, mass transportation, industrial commercial systems, medical devices, lighting, space and military systems, and smart grids and renewable energy systems. So we have separate technical committees in each of these domains. And there are a lot of researchers and academicians, industry professionals, student members who are all part of these technical committees. So the one of the benefits of opening the student branch chapter is that these students are now enabled to be part of these committees, and they can get the knowledge and mentorship that is required for their careers. And so the question is, why should one become a member of PELS? So what are the membership benefits that they get if they become PELS members? So you get the opportunity to participate in conferences and listen to a lot of distinguished lectures and also have access to different publications that are offered by Power Electronics Society. And of course, how the— what is the technology roadmap? What are the new devices? What are the new technologies available, be it wireless power transfer or wide bandgap devices? You name the area and all the details of all those innovations are available if you become a PELS member. You get to hear a lot of distinguished lectures. Sorry, there's a repetition here. And also for students, you get to participate in a lot of student competitions. And also when you can get to go to conferences, you get travel grants which you can use for traveling to the site location of these conferences. Of course, now it is very difficult. Most of the conferences are virtual, but it used to be the case when we had a pre-pandemic world. So I have a few more slides that I've just picked up from the PELS website. I'm going to share those. So these slides are directly from the website of PELS and you can access these. Yeah, so again, uh, about IEEE. IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE's highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational initiatives, activities. I guess nobody needs an introduction to IEEE, but just wanted to go through this anyway. So the PELS in particular was founded in 1987 after a few years of operation as the Power Electronics Council, and PELS has been active since 1987 and with the society of more than 9,000 members worldwide, including both students, academics, and professional members. So this is the offices of the PELS, say, ATCOM, Administrative Committee, uh, for the year 2019-20. Blabjag. And the president-elect, who is the present— present current president, is Dr. Liu-Chen Chang. And these are some of the past presidents, Dr. Alan Mandoot and Dr. Abraham Ferreira, strategy planning chair. And these are the officers of the current PELS SATCOM. We have Vice President of Technical Operations, Dr. Yanfeng Liu, and Vice President of Products— and he's also the current Vice President of Products— Dr. Brad Lehman. And Vice President of Global Relations is Dr. Maria Pakas. Vice President of Conferences, and who's the current chair of overall PELS, is Dr. Liu Chen Chan. And the Vice President of Membership is Dr. Jinjin Lu. He's also the current Vice President of Membership. And Dr. Johan Hills-Enslin is in charge of Standards. And Dr. Jian Sun is the Treasurer. So these are the various activities of PELS worldwide, where we have technical operations, we have products basically, where The team focuses there particularly on different products and product development activities. And in terms of conferences, it's well known the PELS Society conducts a lot of conferences and also co-sponsors many of the conferences. And we have membership development that is a key activity of the PELS. And, and of course, PELS is involved also to work on a lot of drafting a lot of IEEE standards. Through the standards committee. And this is overall organization of the PELS. And what are the membership benefits? So membership benefits particularly include access to a lot of publications in the print or the electronic and digital subscriptions where we get the monthly IEEE Power Electronics magazine where the members can be up to date with what is happening in the world of power electronics and in terms of technology, what are the most happening things. And where the world is headed towards in terms of research and new products. And in terms of— that's on the print media. In terms of online subscription, uh, once you have the IEEE membership and the PELS membership, you have access to all IEEE Power Electronics Letters, IEEE Transactions of Power Electronics, and the Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics, and the IEEE Electrification Magazine. And since October 2019, a new IEEE Open Access Journal of Power Electronics is also available. And which is kind of more open source and free for getting to reaching out to the wider audience. These are all the membership benefits in terms of publications. And the other membership benefits include conference and workshops where we have online access to all PELS-sponsored conferences. The registration discounts are applicable if you are a PELS member. And we have a huge resource center in the PELS website where a lot of multimedia content in terms of webinars, in terms of workshops, and in terms of a lot of online Tutorials are available for easy access, and students can directly go and reach out to some of these professors and distinguished faculty. And we have webinars, newsletters, proceedings, conferences, and presentations and video slides. And finally, in terms of technical committee, there are a lot of— I think around 12 technical committees in which key areas are identified, and the research and, and the consensus building of which which area or the which particular way the industry has to progress is being defined in terms of power and control technologies or power conversion systems and components. We have motor drives and actuators, vehicle transportation in terms of electric vehicles and sustainable energy systems, communication energy, high performance and emerging technologies. So a lot of technical committee committees are available and students are free to be part of these committees or listen to the some of the. discussions that are happening there if you are— if you become a member. And one of the most important benefits of being a member is the networking that the society provides. So BELS has over 170 chapters worldwide, including professional and student branches. Like for example, in Bangalore, we have a professional Power Electronics Society in which we are all part of, and we are also having all these student branches. So this promotes the interaction between working professionals, academics, and students. And the young professionals, the engineers that are going to come out, graduate from colleges like yours, they have the benefit of enjoying the good networking opportunities that PELS membership provides in conferences like APEC or the ECCE that is going to be held at North America, Asia, Europe, and SPECE. And members also participate in technical committees, conference committees, chapters. These are also opportunities to volunteer oneself to be part of these conferences. And students can get exposed to how to organize these kind of big events and be becoming, becoming a volunteer. So Women in Engineering and other social gatherings are also part of these conferences. And of course, we have mentorship events. So these are other benefits that you get once you become part of PELS. And the Distinguished Lecture Program is when, where we, for each year, a few distinguished faculty members, academicians, and people from industry are selected And they give a lot of lectures to the overall memberships, all members of the society. And the class of 2019-20, here you can see some of some high-profile names. Dr. Vassilos Aggelidis from TU Denmark, Wenjian Qiu from NTU, Paolo Mattevelli from University of Padova, Italy, Krishna Shenai from University of Chicago, USA, Jian Sun from RPT New York. And like this class of 2019, and this distinguished lecture program keeps on changing every year, and the class of 2020 is what you see on the right. We have some high-profile names like Tobias Goyer from ABB Corporate Research. And not only distinguished lecture, because what happened was with distinguished lecture program, uh, the PELS had to sponsor the travel and the accommodation of all these people. And so this used to be difficult in terms of arranging logistics. So of late, the last couple of years, there have been regional distinguished lecturers where some distinguished lecturers from the particular region— so we represent Region 10 where we come under Asia and we are covered by India and China. So Regional Distinguished Lecture Program is another program that has been designed for the— for by the PELS committees where regionally some distinguished lecturers are identified, and this helps in locating these people and makes the logistics easier. So this way the student branch chapters or the Bangalore chapter can write to these faculty members and they will provide their availability as to when they are available, and we can schedule their tech lecture series or talks which will be highly beneficial to the overall student and professional community. So to request a DR talk, we can just fill out a form and submit to them and get their availability. So these are some of the other benefits that you get being a PELS member. And a lot of education and student activities are also part of the PELS charter. So it has a broad student program and supports exciting student activities. We have the IEEE Future Energy Challenge for students who are currently in school. Where it's an international competition for innovation, conservation, and effective use of electrical energy. And student travel grants are provided for students who want to participate in PELS conferences worldwide. And there are also a lot of mentorship events when you go to these conferences where mentors identify the nice students and support them through their— and providing a chart path for their careers. And we also have the PELS Prize PhD Thesis Talk, encourages recently graduated PhD students to make a video of up to 200 seconds on their PhD projects. Showcasing their research achievements in academics and industrial fields. So they submit their video explaining their research work, and this goes into competition just to promote the student activities. And in terms of standards, since PELS has a broad membership in terms of academics and the industry professionals, and they also establish a lot of working groups and make the technology roadmap for a lot of like for example, the wideband devices and numerous standards. So all these standards are written in close consultation with members of the academia and members of the industry and members of the larger public, where we have standard working groups and they start writing these standards. And once the standards come to certain conclusion, they send it out for ballots and then the standards are published. So for these, we are— there are actually a lot of volunteers in terms of writing these standards. And the current standard activities, for example, is Matt Wilkowski is leading the Electronics and Transformers Technical Committee. And these are just a few of them mentioned here. There are a lot of other standards activities are also going on. For example, led by Mishra Steyer is the Recommended Practice Provides Established Practices for the Use of Methods of Hardware in the Loop. So, uh, just a second. And also the Power Train Society is the home society for the transportation electrification, and a lot of activities that are going on there is also part of the PELS. So that's it. So it's time to build knowledge and awareness of the latest technologies and other advances in PELS. IEEE Power Electronics Society's goal is to keep the members current and competitive in the workplace and provide the tools necessary to help them grow both personally and professionally. So we would welcome all present here to join PELS today and get to the power of the industry. So you can visit pels.org. So now I'll go back to my PPT, continue from there. So coming back to membership, so this is the status of the membership from last year. So we are, if you see in the Bangalore region, we have about 101 total members of the Power Electronics Society, in which 39 are members and 29 are CA members, and the student members are 21. So this gives the bar chart of different How people are, how they split up in terms of the focus area and in terms of gender and grade. You can see that we still have a lot of room for growth in the student members. So I would urge all the student members present here to sign up for PELS and reap all the benefits that the membership offers and continue striving and improving yourself in this area. So to this end, we have, uh, requested the, uh, PELS member society to provide some benefits and provide some discounts given the current situation in the pandemic. And so now for the PELS membership, we have a 50% discount, uh, where you can get a yearly membership for the price of $6.50. That comes to about ₹500 INR. And also for the Industrial Electronics Society, I know this is not the right forum, but even for IES, we have the discount for joining because PELS works in close cooperation with IES. So you can see some of the slides here. So you can use this code if you are going to sign up. You can use the PELS50FUTURE and get the membership benefit. And student membership is very important because student represents the broader base of the community to which all these programs that we are catering— are designing It has to go reach down to the students because they form the base of the pyramid. And the student branch chapters offer the opportunity for the PEL student members in local areas to network with colleagues, develop activities for professional development, and share the expertise through technical exchange. So we all understand that we don't grow professionally as well as in a personal knowledge level if you are working alone. So we need to exchange ideas and we need to share our experiences and understanding with a wider circle. And that's how we all grow as a overall. So what is a student branch chapter and how to create? I guess you have gone through this process already. For members of the other colleges who are attending, I can just tell here briefly. So it's a— a student branch chapter is a technical subunit of a student branch constituted by a minimum of 6 IEEE members of student member or a graduate student member grade of a society and established by petition to the parent student branch and society concerned to represent and fulfill the needs of the members and the missions of IEEE. So I guess the students of New Horizon College of Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, have gone through this, this, this, this grind where they have selected 6 people and they have petitioned to the IEEE branch in their college and also to the PELS, the worldwide body. And I think they've got the permission to open this. So that is, that's it. And what are the other benefits of having the student branch? So you have a PELS student guidebook. The guidebook was prepared as a reference text for students to establish a PELS SBC at their institution. And those— once the student branch chapter is formed, you need to identify certain leaders to take up the leadership role of the student branch who will be driving the activities of the student branch. And PELS supports the newly formed student branch by providing an initial grant of $500. And that is for the starting of the initiation of the activities of the branch. And if the student branch is able to conduct good programs that benefits the community and also the students, they have to report these events to the governing body and using standard, standard tools. And for this, you will be given a yearly fund of around $250 for continuing this reporting activity. And once you have created, opened this branch, you can write to the parent chapter and you will be given a toolkit which you can use for promotional activities. And as I told earlier, we have the distinguished lecturer on the RDL programs where you can write to RDLs in your region and ask them to talk on, on current areas or the areas in which they are working. And based on the activities that you do and based on the track record of all the events you have reported over a period of time, you can contest for the Best Student Branch Chapter Award. And for example, the last year, the winner of the PELS Best Student Chapter Award was IIT Mandi in India. So it's, uh, it is not very difficult. Actually, as a matter of fact, the PELS Bangalore chapter has been awarded the best chapter worldwide for this year. So this is something we can strive to do by promoting good events and giving benefits to the members of the chapter. So that's all I had for the presentation. And, uh, yeah, thank you.
Thank you so much, sir, for your insightful words about IEEE organization. I now request Dr. M. Mahesh, HOD of Electrical and Electronics Department, New Horizon College of Engineering, to give us the information about IEEE PELS NSE activities and introduce the office bearers.
Information about IEEE Power Electronics Society at NSE activities and introduce of office bearers. IEEE Power Electronics Society Student Branch Chapter of New Horizon College of Engineering is dedicated to promoting power electronics and energy conversion technologies for various applications. Through this society, regular activities include technical talks by experts from both industry and academia, as well as visits to local companies specializing in power conversion, energy, or related areas of energy. Being a new society under New Horizon College of Engineering IEEE Student Chapter, the Department of EEE envisages the following activities as immediate goals. Initiate talks with companies like Philips, ABB, ASML for invited lectures. Invite professors of excellence for sharing experiences and result— research results. Industrial tours to companies in close vicinity of Bangalore and around Bangalore. Organizing distinguished lecture programs online. Organizing webinars in recent trends of power electronics domain and also the cutting-edge technologies of electrical engineering online as well as offline, brainstorming session on entrepreneurship and academia online and offline, workshop— workshops, symposium, project design contest to all the technical active students online as well as offline, and also technical competitions, challenges for students in power electronics and multidisciplinary domain, both offline as well as online. These are the plans we have with us. The IEEE Powertronics Society at NSE has proposed that the branch chapter constitution will have the following office bearers proposed for the year 2021. Dr. Vinod Kumar, Associate Professor, Senior ITPRI Member, will serve as an advisor, followed by the student members for various positions.
I am accepting the proposed office bearers.
So I, Dr. Nisha, second the proposal.
Okay, Dr. Gunapriya accepted the proposed Office bearers and Dr. Nishal seconded the proposed office bearers of IEEE Powertronics Society Student Branch Chapter for the year 2021.
Thank you, HOD sir. I now request Dr. Manjunatha sir, Principal, New Horizon College of Engineering, to address the inaugural ceremony.
Thank you. Good morning everyone. Am I audible?
Yes, sir. Good morning, sir.
Morning, sir.
Yeah, good morning everyone. Good morning, respected chief guest, faculty members, and HOD of the Electrical and Electronics Department, and other my dear deans and HODs. Today I'm very happy to be part of this event. This is according to me It is a supporting system for the students. Now we are all talking about the NEP, National Educational Policy. It actually focused towards the learning-centric. Actually, the traditional way of teaching is generally the faculty member, they teach and no much interaction with the students. And students will listen what teacher is going to teach. And the teacher, the interest is to complete the syllabus in order to get degree to all our students. And we have, of course, we have the credit system. So the student has to earn Minimum of 165 to 175 grade as prescribed by university or AICTE. That way we do generally, but this supporting activities especially, I thank the IEEE student chapter, the members, and also the office bearers, and especially the chairperson Our chief guest, I thank you are taking a good initiative to support our students. And already has explained what all the benefits we are going to get from this student chapter. The students will attend many conferences, seminars, workshop, and eminent guest lecture, and all. It is going to have beyond our curriculum. Thereby, students will understand the latest and existing practice of the industry. So you all aware, most of the industry experts, when they come to college, they will actually ask one question, whether your students are ready to work in our industry. And also they insist all the students also should know the latest, their technology. But they insist, but they don't bring their technology in the campus. Of course Some, a few companies, they come forward and set up their labs in the campus, and voluntarily some of the industry experts, they will come and teach our students also. But most of the cases, most of the cases, industry interaction is still, it is less. I'm very happy about our medical education system. You must have observed in the medical education system, the— after 4 years of MBBS theory, they have to undergo one internship. At the same time, even in their curriculum, any particular theory is associated with the lab. Lab in the sense directly it is attached to hospital. So So in particular, that study, they actually interact with the patient and try to treat the patient, all they do in medical education system. Similar way, my dream is all the colleges should attach with the industry, and industry project has to come to the institution. And industry experts should be part of the teacher or faculty, maybe a support system. If it happens, definitely our engineering education system will also improve. At the same time, I'm so happy about this pandemic period. You may suddenly get surprised Because this pandemic has 2 kinds. One kind already we are aware, so entire our economy is gone down, and most of the, uh, even these states and all the districts has announced their lockdown, and the people are not moving outside. All those things, it is happening. It is one part, one side of the story. The second side, hats off to the technology. Though all of us, we are in different places, but we are coming together and we are conducting this virtual inauguration. It is just because of the technology. Hats off to the technology and hats off to some of the software industry. Those actually gave us this platform to talk To all of you in this platform, thank you to that industry experts for providing this opportunity. And because of this, the society, our professional body benefit. All the students, please actually utilize this. Most of the students, they though they get. This kind of support they may not utilize. If you don't utilize the effort what we are putting in, it is going to be waste. Please, because especially in professional course, innovation is must. Without innovation, we cannot do anything. Day by day, the technology is changing and If you actually work with the innovation, you can become entrepreneurs. Because nowadays what is happening is any new technology, if it comes, definitely you can improve the economy, economy of India and improve your own financial stability. And you can employ your own students or your own friends also. So what I suggest all the students, please utilize this opportunity and utilize this benefits of this student chapter and work with the project and go through all the literature survey, because this paper publication, research publication, it is going to help you What is happening around us and what improvement we need to do. All those things you will understand. Once you understand, you can do some innovative concept ideas. You can go with the patent. For example, you can observe this pandemic also. What happened? Who is actually manufacturing 1962 They started a small, the pharma company with very less investment. Today it is actually helping entire society, even entire country also. Why? Because they did not stop with their present technology, whatever it is. They actually utilized the opportunity and, and started starting or helping other members also. They started the vaccine manufacturing company, and now you can see their success. I am not actually insisting you to do like that, but you have to see the opportunity, you have to do the innovation, and definitely you will get breakthrough in your career. So with this, I actually thank once again our chief guest. He has explained thoroughly about the benefits of the student chapter and also advised all the students to take part of this event activities. And thank you so much, sir. It is going to help the entire student community. And also I thank Dr. Mahesh, the HOD of Electrical and Electronics Department, for initiating this particular chapter. And also I thank all the office bearers, and especially I thank students. And today The students only they are doing all this the work, and also they are only comparing this event and anchoring all this. Everything students are doing very good work from all of you. You have done a wonderful job. The same spirit you have to continue with this activity. Because whatever we start or whatever we inaugurate, it should not be in the paper. Always, whatever the activity we do, it should be active participation, and the MOU should be active. See, active MOUs only actually plays a major role in improving our— the knowledge. So with this, once again, I thank everyone and all the best for your career. Thank you so much.
Thank you, Principal Sir, for your wonderful words of motivation.
Thank you.
I now request Dr. KCR Nisha Ma'am, IEEE NSE branch counselor, to give the vote of thanks.
